Increasing solar activity could wreak havoc

The sun waking from a deep sleep may not sound like such a bad thing and years ago it might not have been.
Nasa warns of effects of 'space storm' Play video Increasing solar activity could wreak havoc Enlarge photo
However in today's world reliant on technology for the basics of everyday life, increasing levels of solar activity and the flares from the consequent 'space storm' could wreak complete havoc.
Nasa is telling us to prepare for a once in a generation storm which could result in widespread blackouts and leave us without critical communication signals for considerable periods of time.
The overheating of national power grids, mass disruption of air travel and the complete shut down of electronic items, navigation devices and major satellites are just some of the consequences of the sun reaching its maximum power in only a few years time.

That will throw the dog among the pheasants. World-wide plagues, volcanoes, solar activity, whoever next! :o

You never pop over to the off-topic forum do you RB?

This subject has been so much discussed that most of us are now living in chalk caves deep under Wiltshire.

Personally, I think the sun has been heating for many years, hence why we have the climate changes going on now. That big yellow ball that gives us life is only 90 odd million miles away after all.

Normally I would agree that this is OT. However, its made front page on Yahoo. The economic consequences will far exceed the Volcano.

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzz...............

Whenever I read stories like this, I always remember H.L. Mencken's quote:

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

H. L. Mencken

You can't read a newspaper these days without bumping into a story like this.

Why fret? If it happens, there's bugger all you can do about it anyway.

Actually, if you lined all the walls of your house with tins of baked beans, it would provide shielding.. tins of beer would do as well, at a pinch.

The other slight issue is that this is perfectly preventable compared to most natural-disaster type thingies, it just requires a decent monitoring network.
