Royal Mail Could Be Floated In Biggest Privatisation For Two Decades, Says Ed Davey

Ed Davey, the Postal Affairs Minister, said he was considering a full-scale privatisation as one of the options to raise money urgently for the beleaguered company.

Royal Mail’s future is in doubt without fresh investment because of a “lethal combination” of a sharp fall in revenue from the declining number of letters and parcels being sent and a growing black hole in its pension scheme, he warned.

In his first interview since being appointed, Mr Davey said that floating the company was an option because its future was at stake. Under the plan, Royal Mail, which runs the postal delivery, would be privatised. The Post Office, which runs the 12,000 branches across the country, would remain in government hands.

He also disclosed that:

* The era of big pay packets for Royal Mail executives is over and that ministers had put pressure on Royal Mail to cut the pay for its new chief executive, Moya Greene, after Adam Crozier, her predecessor, earned more than £2 million last year.

* The Coalition would never repeat “Labour’s mass closure programme” of post office branches.

* Postal workers could be given shares in any part-privatisation so they have an incentive to improve performance.

* Royal Mail’s pension deficit could have reached £10 billion.

The company is due to agree the size of the black hole with its pension trustees at the end of the month. Money raised from private investors could be used to clear the deficit.

So would you want to buy shares in Royal Mail?

You know in this era where we buy so much online and it is delivered.. the post office might be a great business.

My idea for the day: what if mailboxes were replaced with more like mail lockers at each house. That the postal companies had keys to open, and they could put in entire parcels into the locker while you were out.

No body over here gets there mail through a leeter box into the house, everything goes in your mailbox and it can be as big or samll as you like..... and they arent locked.

Maybe the RM will sink rather than float
