Nine-month-old Isabella and Lola Koupparis were attacked as they slept in an upstairs room after the animal found its way into their house in London.

Police believe the fox made its way through patio doors left open because of the heat.

One girl is believed to have suffered wounds to an eye while the other has had surgery on an arm.

Their parents, Nick and Pauline Koupparis, dialled 999 at 10pm on Saturday after chasing the fox from their £800,000 threestorey Victorian terraced house in Stoke Newington, East London

Now why is this at all relevant to the story?

Here's why:

Owning an £800,000 house means these people are nice, middle class and probably professional, therefore they deserve sympathy. Had they been immigrants sleeping on a sofa of some slum landlord hell-hole, they wouldn't deserve any sympathy (according to the values of the Wail readership).

A lot of truth in this statement, not just immigrants that are in the slumlord category now though and many of those have an exit plan which means living like that for a ear to a decade makes very good sense over a lifetime.

One other one that gets my goat is when they talk about burglaries in realtion to "homeowners". It has nothing to with home ownership it is the resident at a place that gets burgled, not the bank.

I think it is for a subtly different reason. I think it way of justifying the story being reported at all.

Look these things can happen to actual people. Real people. People with houses. People like you.!!

It isn't designed so that people sympathise with the victims, it is so they sympathise with themselves .... 'OMG!! OMG!! .. O...M...G this could happen to US Tarquin, to US. Why is life so cruel......<sob>'

At least it didn't make off with the Parma Ham.

It is to reinforce HPI. If readers can be acclimatised to the fact that £800,000 is not an unusual price for a house in an area such as Stoke Newington, then £195,000 for a vile little slavebox in this type of area starts to feel cheap. WAMP, WAMP, WAMP. c**ts.

I take the opposite view.

If these people had the wherewithal to afford an £800k house, they had th emeans to look after their children. What they did not have was the inclination.

As I understand it, Mail readership has never been too happy about the left's attempt (through NewLabour) to steal the centre ground and the middle classes from the Tories. Mail readership as I understand it see themselves as conservative with botha big and small "c". That means they value both financial independence (money) and social independence (family). New Labour however valued money, but thought the state should look after your kids ( amongst other things - hence nanny state).

In this regard, this story is perfect Wail fodder, because it demarks the boundary betwen the nouveau-nouveau-riche of New Labour - all-mortgage-and-state-school - and genuine conservatives. The New Labour rich, once known as champagene socialists, might be able to buy a big house, but they simply haven't the breeding to understand the dangers of the world, or sense to bring up a child. That is my take on why the house price appears in this story.

blimey - this comment from the mails story puts the most ardent TFH'er on HPC to shame!

Hate to say it, but even if 'bite marks' are proven to be that of a fox still, it still doesn't mean the fox did it. Is it not possible for a human to take a dead foxes jaw/teeth attach them to make a pliers type of device & then sink away into flesh. A very sceptic thought I know, but possible nonetheless.

Ha ha.

Imagine actually thinking that in the first place.

I must admit, I am more than a little sceptical about the details of the Fox attack, but that is mental.

FWIW - I also got the impression the media are a little, lets say, confused by the event.

Except the Daily Mail who will probably reveal tomorrow that it was an immigrant Fox. A Muslim immigrant Fox. From Poland.
