Markets in Europe and the US hit fresh lows during May as fears over Greek, Spanish and Portuguese debts heightened doubts about the euro project and increased worries of a "double dip recession".

France’s CAC-40 tumbled 7.9pc during the month, Spain’s Ibex dropped 10.2pc, and Germany's DAX slid 3.1pc. The US Dow Jones was on course to close down 8pc following a Fitch downgrade of Spain after European markets had closed on Friday.
