So, the Tories held it as was to be expected. Also to be expected was for the Lib-Dem vote to collapse as all of their supporters - who only ever voted for them to keep the Tories out returned to their true NuLabour home after all - except that's not what happened. The Tory vote stayed stable, the Labour vote halved and the Lib-Dems moved into 2nd spot.

In the south west (a lib stronghold) there is absolutely no way in hell that any disenchanted libs would defect to Labour in signifivant numbers.

They would vote tory in their droves as the next, least worst, option.

Im getting hacked off with all these bad loser labour twats all over the telly (QT last night for instance) telling me that the "left" won the election.

Would that be the left that cut CGT to 18% and simultaneously axed the 10p rate for the low paid?

****** to the "left".

The Lib Dem advance in Thirsk and Malton fits in with the results yesterday of council by-elections from around the country and a delayed election in one three member ward in a London borough.

Clearly there is a honeymoon effect, just as when Blair won in 1997.

Whether it will survive the Budget remains to be seen.
