Mortgage Application Refused Because Of Japanese Knotweed In Garden

Recommended Posts

Executive summary: man tries to get £80k remortgage on £400k house in Cornwall; Santander refuses after survey reveals a small amount of Japanese knotweed in the garden, claiming that it threatens the structure of the building.

I can't help thinking that there's something we're not being told about this. Apparently it costs about £100 a square foot to nuke the stuff totally, and he claims that he has 'only half a dozen sticks' of the stuff. Surely, then, the cost of getting rid of it to Santander's satisfaction can't be much in the context of an £80k mortgage application. I can't help wondering if the real reason is that this guy's finances don't look good overall (the story doesn't tell us what he wants the remortgage for) and that Santander decided that it was less hassle to use the knotweed as a pretext for walking away than getting into an argument with him about the actual reason.
