M P Diane Abbott bids for Labour's Leadership

And listed housing as top priority

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

MP Diane Abbott has just launched her bid for the leadership of the labour party. (On Radio 4, Today Program, half an hour ago.) And she listed housing as top priority, and criticised the later Labour government for failing on this.

Question is: How are her chances inside the Labour Party?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8693687.stm

On an interesting side issue, I think Cameron would find her the most difficult opponent at PMQs. She is a good debater, and Mr Cameron, a posh upper class, white, man, would find it awkward to attack a working class, black, woman.

And, in terms of image, she would out-Obama Obama, and by a loooong way:

1) Obama is half black, Ms Abbott is 100% black.

2) Obama's father was an African scholar, Ms Abbott is descendent of slaves really.

3) Obama is a man, Ms Abbott is a woman.

4) Obama is thin, Ms Abbott is... well, less so.

5) Obama is tall, Ms Abbott is... well, less so.

Question is: How are her chances inside the Labour Party?

Wonder why she is running? She feigned disinterest when put to the question a few days ago.

Has she ever shown concern for Housing before?

She's no hope of becoming Labour Leader. More chance of Absolute Zero winning that trophy. I'd love to see David Cameron argue with a Dalek

Chances of Diane Abbott ever getting to be Labour party leader and then elected into government?

Nil. Nada. Zilch. Zero. Nowt. Nothing.

I am not that sure. She has the "Obama factor" on her side. I've just edited the OP, adding this there:

Interesting.

With the fact she has housing as a top priority, I wonder what her policies on housing are likely to be?

I think they'll be much like her policies on education.

The best for her family - everyone else can put up with sh1te.

Did I mention she's racist? And corrupt?

I quite often go to political meetings in London where the likes of Diane Abbott, Jon Cruddas etc pop up. When a leftwing backbencher tells you housing is their top priority, they mean council housing. They generally believe private rented is an expensive scam and anybody who can afford to buy a house doesn't need help. They are just looking after their own, don't expect them to take any interest in the 80% of the country that doesn't have a council house. I went to a political meeting in London this week organised by Ken Livingstone and a couple of Labour MPs who survived the cull, from the way they were talking I would guess Labour is going to retreat into its shell for quite a while and just look after its core constituency (public sector employees and people who live in council houses or claim benefits).

She is certainly bigotted. I wrote to complain about her comments about Londoners: talking about them as though they were the cream of the crop, whilst the rest of the country she implied were less then they ought to be." Oh, LONdoners wouldn't do that"dry.gif and went on to warm to her theme.

Such a hypocrite. Wonder what would have erupted if someone had said black MPs are not as good as white ones?rolleyes.gif

Someone ought to point out..and I did! laugh.gif - that prejudice covers a range of issues. It isn't just a hedge to hide behind 'cos you happen to be black and therefore exempt from criticism.

"Racist"? What do you mean?

Edit: Corrupt? I though the Telegraph said she was OK on her expenses.

Don't get me wrong, I would love it, just love it, if she was Labour leader - they would be out of power for a generation.

As for racist: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Abbott#Criticism_against_Finnish_nurses

As for corrupt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Abbott#Failure_to_declare_earnings

And this is just what has come out when she's was a back bencher, imagine what other good stuff there is for the press to find!

I like Dianne Abbott. When she is on that show with Portillo even though she is a back bench M.P. she admits to some of the failings of her own party.

She's the only labour politician I would vote for.

Yes, I think you are right, and she means council housing. The next question then would be if she thinks more should be built, increasing the stock/supply of housing, or just increase councils' budgets, for renting from the current private stock, thus crowding-up even more the current rental market.

blonde, blue-eyed Finnish girls" in her local hospital in West London were unsuitable as nurses because they "may never have met a black person before"

Abbott was investigated by the Committee on Standards and Privileges regarding payment she had received from the BBC. They found she had failed to declare earnings £17,300

When Prime Minister Tony Blair sent his eldest son, Euan, to the London Oratory, a selective school, she criticised him, saying people voted Labour because they believed in equality. :)

And when Solicitor General Harriet Harman sent her son to a selective grammar school in Orpington, Kent, Ms Abbott said: "She made the Labour Party look as if we do one thing and say another."

She is rscist, but does it very covertly,

She used to write a small colume in the evening standard , once she was talking about the black immigrants who came over here in the 50's and 60's selling up and going back home with nice chuncks of money. She quoted that when white people were still in council flats black people were buying houses and were now better off for doing this. She did not back her statment up with any numbers , facts or figures, The truth of the matter is there has always been black and white who bought and black and white or were in council houses . RACIST . The tone was blacks were superior to whites as they bought houses whites did not.

Even if she doesn't win, if she manages to gather a reasonable support, she will then be a natural candidate for the front bench.

Admits labour failings , she admits her own as well , due to having no choice when she sent her son to private school , remember her actually calling herself a hyprocrite that does not make me like her it makes me see her as someone saying do as i say not as i do !!

That is probably a good plan politically for them. A coalition of public sector employees and people on benefits is basically a majority of the electorate. They must have lost last time based on elderly people switching their vote.

If long term trends from across the industrialized world continue 5 years from now and 10 years from now an even greater percentage of the population is going to be on benefits or work for the public sector.
