What Has The Bbc Done To Watchdog?

Recommended Posts

Never mind the controversial new style for the forums, what on earth has the BBC done to Watchdog?

They seem to have ditched the good presenters they had in favour of Ann Robinson. I watched 10 minutes of the new-look show and it was basically like a party political broadcast on behalf of Ryanair. Michael O'Leary was fed a few tame questions that handed him an opportunity to say 'if you want to pay a lot to fly, then probably Ryanair is not the airline for you', or similar words.

Watchdog now looks like a sort of Top Gear of consumerism. In other words a presenter-based light infotainment show. I know Ms Robinson was on Watchdog in its early days, but why did they try to fix a show that wasn't broke?

Because protecting consumers and allowing them not to be ripped off is the exact opposite of what the government wants ? , and since the BBC is the main propaganda machine of the government (its changing because they may have to be the propaganda machine of the next government) they have to toe their line.

I've just dipped back into watchdog since starting this thread. Ann's two sub presenters, her equivalents of Richard Hammond and James May, seem OK. Especially the skinny girl with big eyes who also does reports for the One show, I like her. But I still think the show as a whole has been dumbed down.

I think that would require a greater degree of joined-up thinking than would be achievable in the current climate! Edited by blankster

No doubt as a response to falling viewing figures it was deemed a makeover was required.

Morph Watchdog and Rogue traders into one hour, then realise they can spread about 15 minutes of hard-hitting consumer journalism into a colourful, lightweight info-tainment 60 minutes. For all the good it is now, thinking about it, may as well just watch Morph.

Same thing happened with Working Lunch, by trying to appeal to a new audience, they completely cheesed off their previous M & S shopping, R4 listening, hard-core devotees. So epic fail.

Especially when they jazz it up with a music bed underneath speaking to camera so that a good number of their elderly hard of hearing viewers suffering from tinnitus get really annoyed.

Awesome, its like The Young Ones have grown up and become BBC producers.
