What Would You Do With £15,000?

Recommended Posts

Nobody thought an hour with Sophie Anderton was worth £15,000, nice as she is.

So....

You have £15,000 in fun money. What would you do with it?

Can I steer you away from cars (would upgrading your car really be that much fun?) and investments (see the dictionary definiton of "fun").

I'm sort of in that position and am trying to resist my frugalista orthodoxy by just investing it.

If you HAD to spend it ;) ....

a) Round the world tour?

B) Transform one room into an entertainment complex.

c) Use bits and bobs throughout the year living the high life - go out for good meals and to the theatre a lot etc.

d) Bits and bobs again - do things like skydiving one week, rafting the next - stuff other people never get around to doing.

Put it into savings account and help pay down the mortgage when the fixed rate is up. If I had to spend it, convert the attic into a further bedroom+ensuite+changing room (if 15k is enough for the bare bones)

For fun I would either:

Buy a ZX10R the super super upraded 2003 version I saw in a shop yesterday and go sajjaak Lucaasen (he toured the world on a R1 for 3 years)

Buy the this seriously upgraded RGV250 (which is more like an RGV400 with every technological advance put on it since 1996) and attempt to break the world record for the Nurburg ring ie 7:49.71(which was done on an RC30 which is a 17 year old bike).

Or roll out the XT600E again , buy a new C&S set for it stick a scott oiler on it a oil cooler and 2 new sets of Trelleborg tyres and go for a 3 year world tour.

Sensibility would have me pay off a few things , go study an MA and leave the country 2 years ahead of schedule

Buy a big pile of trinkets and baubles made of precious metals and other shiney things. Pile them in the middle of my living room, draw the curtains, and lie down on them to sleep, imagining myself to be a magnificent dragon.

Isnt that what most people on here would do?unsure.gif

I would buy into the world series of Poker.

The buy in is actually $15,000, so depending on whether its Brown or Obama winning the battle to ****** their nations currency into the middle of the next decade that particular week would mean I either have to top up myself, or have a few dollars left to bone Angel Dark.

Gold Finger might have discovered there is more you can do with a gold finger than meets the eye, whilst I think Uncle Rogi may have been crushed to death under a big pile of 'Fail' posters which fell on him?

I hadn't thought of Picolax

Cutting down to £5k is a thought.

WIth bikes too many people I have known have had nasty accidents so it stopped me riding (I hadn't got that far with the training tbh).

For some reason I have an attraction to buying a small caravan and going on a leisurely tour of the country using certified locations. Anybody tried this?

Entertainment centre wouldn't be my thing. It would mean I went out less.

I'd spend it all on medical treatment and go abroad to see one of the doctors who offers treatment that I can't get on the NHS

For the past 27 years I've suffered from an incurable neurological disease and the NHS has been appalling. We simply don't have enough Neurologists in the UK to be able to see people at regular/reasonable levels and they are contrained by the NHS on what treatments/tests they can offer.

Although I have spent thousands of pounds on private medical treatment (and had some success) I have never had a lump sum of my own that I could use to go abroad and get the medical tests and treatments that my USA fellow sufferers get through their private health insurance.

I've also had to work hard to support myself and to pay for the disabled aids I need and the extra medical treatment. I've not been able to afford to take time off work as I am always fighting to make up for the time I spent housebound/bedbound too disabled to move, even in a wheelchair.

£15,000 would need to cover my travel costs, hotel, medical consultation and then drugs/tests whatever. I'd be able to build on that once back in the UK.

I'd rehome my wife, then with the money I'd install a complete recording studio and have my amp serviced (finally) I'd also spend about a grand getting leading Jazz guitarist, Phil Capone, to come round and show me some licks and then with the remaining £100, I'd ****** Sophie Anderton.

You must be seriously pissed off by stories like the Sophie Anderton one.

I notice no-one has said anything like 'Use it to buy a 1/4 of a house.' Most peculair, as 15K is a lot of saving for most people, and is about what you would put down as a deposit for a house costing 3-4 times that much only a few short years ago.

(Many apologies for my 'main forum' remarks).

You can buy a house for £60k in Essex?

In London £15k would be 1/4 of a deposit.

No. But that is what they mostly should cost, give or take a bit, and did cost before Broon's Great Leap Forwards, as discussed ad nauseum in The Other Place.

It never actually occurred to me to be pi**ed off at the Sophie Anderton story. I'm used to the gap between the rich and the poor. I'm more pi**ed off at things like fighting for benefits and medical treatment for other people ( I do as much as I can for disabled people in my area when I can directly). Just put my anger into what I can do.
