Tories In Bed With Latvian Waffen Ss

The sight of SS veterans marching down the main avenue of the capital city of a member of Nato and the European Union is hardly a sight to bring joy to the heart of a British political leader. Yet just a few days ago, Conservative chairman Eric Pickles saw fit in an interview on Radio 4 to rush to the defence of the Latvian "For Fatherland and Freedom" party which is among the staunchest supporters of precisely such an event that takes place annually in Riga every 16 March.

The simple explanation is the hackneyed cliche that politics makes strange bedfellows, and that Pickles felt obliged to defend his new partners in the European Conservatives and Reformists group of the European parliament in Strasbourg. In reality, however, Pickles's knee-jerk response is probably the product of sheer ignorance of the world-view of his Latvian political allies and their distorted perceptions of the history of the second world war, which no mainstream British political leader could possibly support.

The controversy over the annual march of the Latvian-SS Legion veterans in Riga has been raging since Latvia regained independence in 1991. Its supporters claim that the men in the Legion were soldiers who only fought against the Soviets and had no connection to SS crimes. They viewed their service as helping to defend Latvia and did so for positive patriotic reasons and not out of loyalty to Nazi Germany. Yet while it is true that the Legion as such did not participate in Holocaust crimes, many of its men were active participants in the mass murder of Jews before the Legion was established in early1943. By this point, practically all of Latvia's 70,000 Jews, as well as most of the approximately 20,000 Central European Jews deported to Riga and many tens of thousands of Jews in Belarus, had been murdered by members of Latvian security police units, many of whom subsequently volunteered to join the Legion, among them numerous men from the infamous Arajs Kommando, one of the most notorious Nazi death squads.

I think there would be a problem dealing with any Latvian party, as I suspect that these SS men are national heroes, and not just the preserve of a fringe party.

The German/Latvian defence of the Kurland Pocket in 1944/1945 is a strong candidate for the greatest feat in military history, regardless of the political unpleasantness of the participants. It would't have succeeded if the Latvians were in any way ambivalent in their feelings toward the Russians.

Maybe in the interest of balance you could post some links about left wing parties past associations with communists and socialist parties that were allied with the Soviets? The NKVD were as bad as the Waffen SS. And the Soviets as bad as the Nazis.

Really though, it's just a low level smear campaign that takes the focus off the real issues - just part of the mood music leading up to a full blown general and local election campaign sometime in the next 2 to 8 months. Looks like it will be a dirty one.

saying SS is not as good as adding Waffen SS.

i dont know why. maybe it makes them sound more insidious...

i mean, if i was hiding or on the run in wartime germany, id prefer to be hunted down by the Waffen SS.

being hunted by the SS is not that inspiring and could easily be like being tracked down by the DHSS or CSA.

with that in mind perhaps we should add Waffen to the rest.

like the Waffen DVLA or the Waffen RSPCA

Come now! Remember the left never did/ does anything wrong! All those enforced famines, ethnic cleansing and labour camps were nothing to do with the Communists!

This link is about as to the point as pointing out how many Liebour members used to be members of the Communist Party.

Pathetic spin from a morally, politically and financially bankrupt leftish elite.............

Hang on a mo. There are plenty of Tories who are uneasy about their party jumping into bed with a bunch of undesirables. Edward Macmillan-Scott MEP was thrown out for speaking up. Seems call-me-Dave is behaving a bit like Der Fuhrer - can't tolerate dissent.

That's asking an awful lot.

It is a low level smear campaign perpetuated by the ignorant. What else do you expect.

Would someone please explain why reporting a fact is a smear campaign. What part of the report above is untrue?

Its the same smear campaign that has been running for months, totally disproved too. If you were not so desperate (and you are desperate) to smear the Tories you would realize a last cause when you see one.

If you want to fight the Tories try and find something positive to say about Labour.

So you are saying that the tories have not formed a group with Latvian right-wingers? You are either stupid/uninformed or a propagandist worthy of the mantle of Goebbels.

LOL :lol: 1929 Crash calling me stupid!

Dude, everyone know your an impressionable idiot that reads the Guardian and falls hook line and sinker for every nut conspiracy going.

The Guardian asserts that our Latvian allies “attend commemorations of Waffen SS veterans In fact, Latvia holds an annual ceremony to honour all those who died fighting the Soviet Union. Some of the soldiers had indeed been conscripted - often against their will - into the German army. But the ceremony is for all who took up arms, and is attended by representatives of every party in Latvia except those that speak for the Russian minority. Let me repeat that: it is attended by every party in Latvia, from the Greens to the Christian Democrats. But, obviously, it would never do to criticise these other parties: they’re pro-Brussels, you see.

To get a sense of how tendentious their coverage has been, imagine it the other way around. Suppose a Latvian newspaper set out to defame the British Tories. Suppose, further, that it did so by running stories about how about how the “anti-Catholic Conservative Partyâ€, which had long opposed giving Roman Catholics the right to vote, supported annual demonstrations of sectarianism in which effigies of Catholics - sometimes of the Pope himself - were burned on bonfires while cheering mobs let off fireworks every 5th of November. We would see straight through it as a gross misrepresentation.

I  at you 1929Crash, I really do!!!

Yep that's right.

You got nothing!

Ladies and gentlemen, you just watched 1929crash getting his ass handed to him.

The simplest solution for the Tories was not to get into bed with any Latvian party. That way they would not have to endure this stain on their good name. But I guess a simple solution like that is just way beyond your ability to grasp, Bingo.

So nobody should do anything in case the Guardian makes up lies and misrepresentation to smear them.

Weak and pathetic.

If you can't find something positive to say about your beloved Labour party don't say anything at all because your look like an idiot (like you just have) when you get found out.

Smears don't work, ask Derek Draper.

Why would they not make an agreement with a Latvian party?

WTF do you have against the Latvians?

Because it turns out that they are all extremist and right wing, nutty right wing that is, just like a lot of the posters on here. Just ask that Tory MEP, Edward Macmillan-Scott. Oh, sorrry, they kicked him out because he said what I said.

And you think Cameron's going to be a change from NuLabour and Brown?

Sorry, if this thread is some kind of twisted attempt to convince us we should somehow still consider vote for the corrupt, incompetent scum that make up Liebour please try harder. That means perhaps trying a line of attack that actually has anything much to do with the UK...........as opposed to a small country trying to purge itself of the historical burden of failed tyrannical socialist experimentation.

Come to think of it, Lativa and us do have something in common.........
