Historic Dividend Returns

Recommended Posts

I am trying to find historic dividend return figures for the DOW and the FTSE indexes since 1980, I thought the info would be easy to find however, after Googling for half an hour all I could find was one quote "Dividends on the Dow fell from 3.94% to 1.47% in the period 1990 to the peak at 1999"

1.47% is very poor and shows how overvalued stocks were then so I am not really surprised this information is not well publicized by those selling stock market investments. The trouble is every search I can think of produces stock market investment sellers.

Can anyone help?

What was that quote talking about? Are you sure it was the index as a whole rather than some particular company on it? Individual companies pay widely different dividends, and those paying nothing at all can be highly profitable investments (e.g. AU on the FTSE).

FWIW, I believe (but don't know) the Dow historically runs at much lower dividend returns than the FTSE.
