HSBC CEO to move to Hong Kong

LONDON (Reuters) - HSBC's chief executive Michael Geoghegan is to move to Hong Kong in February as it focuses increasingly on emerging markets, but Europe's largest bank will maintain its UK base, it said on Thursday.

"The move further positions the group for the shift in the world's centre of economic gravity from West to East, while HSBC's continued strong presence in major developed markets reflects the increasingly interconnected nature of the global economy and the profile of the group's customers," it said in a statement.

Translated: If you think you are going to cut our bonuses and tax our looting we are going to do it somewhere else.

Oh, so first China got all the manuifature, India got all the IT and tel-sell. while we keep the banking casio secter.

So if they move the Casio to Asia, what can british people do?

Let me gusses, we can start a industry of having lots of MP. or hire more people to manage the benifit as more of us is going to need them.

Doesn't sound very bullish to me.

Is this just his office or the whole HQ?

Does it impact the liability of the UK govt. should HSBC need a capital/liquidity bailout?

Can we send RBS to HK too?

They'll take notice when a big one decides to relocate to Dubai, Abu Dhabi or so on.

I would love it if they moved to somewhere like Dubai, I would LOVE IT!

Keep all the greedy self-centered idiots in one place, just like Monaco - a ghetto for the super rich - and it keeps them out of the rest of the world leaving it for us to enjoy.

I'm really sad to be losing him, a real loss to the community.

Would be interesting to see how a UK Banks Corporate Social responsibility statement would square with a move to Dubai or Abu Dhabi ;) Not sure authoritarian, one party religious states would be a good fit

Here is HSBC's...

"Our Group’s status as one of the world’s leaders in the area of corporate social responsibility only increases our sense of responsibility. The experience and expertise we have gained worldwide only makes us all the more effective in this respect.

We approach every new social responsibility project with excitement and passion and work consistently and with commitment to contribute to our communities. Knowing that our people support us every step of the way only makes us more dedicated to contributing to our communities.

As a corporation that is aware of its corporate social responsibility to create a better and more sustainable world, we place great importance on insuring that the projects we undertake are long-term and far-reaching. For this reason, we make it a practice to involve our customers in our projects, and their support makes our efforts even more effective and meaningful.

All over the world, we at HSBC say, with the same commitment and enthusiasm, “We are Committed to the Futureâ€.

We are volunteered for the future… with community.

We are volunteered for the future… with education.

We are volunteered for the future… with environment. "

Bit jealous are you? If you are upset bytheir deal why don't you go and find your own better deal rather than bleating about other people's?

That particular rat has fled from a sinking ship before.

Its move to London from Hong Kong was planned prior to Hong Kong reverting to Communist China's ownership and a pre-requisite ('sweetened') for allowing it to takeover a UK top 4 bank (formerly the biggest in the world before wwII) the Midland.

Indeed!

I wonder if this is so they can avoid European competition law (or some other reason/regulatory nod though) when they make a bid for, say (off the top of my head) the govts. shares in RBS?
