For The Attention Of Mods And Property Bee Lovers

Recommended Posts

As suggested on the other Property Bee thread. Here is a post to ask all at HPC to look into either some short term, or if agreeable to Beerhunter himself, a long term tie up between this site and Property Bee.

His unpaid work is utilised by many on this site where it proves to be a very clear and unbeatable study of the realities of what is happening in the market. The fact he does this in his spare time is in itself reminiscent of a bygone era, a Corinthian Casual if you like of the online era.

It is deliciously subversive to the vested interests of Estate agents and Rightmove alike and is perhaps more powerful than any data currently held on HPC as to what is happening in the market.

He is unfortunately not that well at the moment and as a result they are asking all and sundry to keep the programme going and upto speed with Rightmove.

For this reason I ask, no implore the site mods/owners to contact PropertyBee with regard to helping out in the short term with some of the programming updates they desperately need and perhaps in the long term in bringing the site into the HPSC fold.

Everyone please feel free to lobby HPC here for their response.

+1

It's been reported HPC makes very serious money. Sponsorship for PropertyBee would seem like a Very Good use for some of that money.

I would be happy to pay upto £15 for the PropertyBee ...

Would be a viable financial model for the PB developer?

Your £15 donation is between you and propertybee.

The suggestion here is that HPC, being (reportedly) a highly profitable website, should make a contribution. If reports in the mainstream media are to be believed, a sponsorship deal of several hundred or even a thousand a month would be a small fraction of HPC income. That's on a rather different scale to any contribution coming out of our individual pockets.

I'm not party to HPC's accounts, so I don't know - maybe they already contribute; maybe that advertising revenue has fallen victim to the recession. But having been on the receiving end of that kind of sponsorship when I was struggling, I can tell you it makes a big difference.

Serious point, folks:

We are concerned enough on here to criticise obvious vested interests in the media, so much so that I reckon HPC sponsoring Property Bee would draw precisely the same kind of criticism.

I personally vote for a sticky on the forum encouraging donations from individuals to Property Bee, but I think it's a smarter move to keep Property Bee interest free... ish(!).

Seriously (and apologies for the clumsiness of this analogy, but I hope it sort of makes sense), it'd be like The Daily Express sponsoring Singing Pig! Trust you can see what I'm getting at (ahem).

Best wishes to Beerhunter if he's reading this - hope we gets well soon. Property Bee is a fabulous tool and I think we're all very grateful for his efforts. I completely agree with Brave New World in that it's one of the best weapons in our artillery!

as a hpc member and a paid up subscriber to property bee i would welcome a link between the two

at the very least free linky but if it can help with the web hosting costs perhaps or sharing advertisers then that would be great. i guess not many people go to the propertybee website so they wont get the link so maybe hpc can share some bandwidth?

for me propertybee and hpc go hand in hand as hpc is all about finding the truth with house prices - are they selling? are they cutting prices or raising them? are estate agents changing descriptions on properties as they were previously telling porkies etc etc

Property Bee is impartial. It merely shows changes in listings and how long the have been advertised etc. No vested interests exist whatsoever. How can it be one sided? houses go up and down, it merely helps show which way things are going.

The bee is an ideal tool for home-buyers to find a bargain. Helping people find bargains, helps people buy houses and increase sales. So the bee probably has the opposite effect of letting house prices plummet, and is of great assistance in the 'return to normal' period.

Agree. But HPC has a name that is less than impartial. Tricky but true. If it was known that HPC sponsored Property Bee it would undermine Property Bee's impartiality by the misfortune of implication.

Agree. The Property Bee is awesome beyond belief. Fantastic tool to take the power out of the hands of pesky, self-interested estate agents. Brilliant to monitor estate agents' ridiculous strategies, bless 'em.

This is trickier to agree with. The effect of the Property Bee is a genuine unknown, as is most of this dreadfully tricky economic situation with which we are faced and events only make sense with the benefit of 'x' years of hindsight. You might not be wrong but I'd be hesitant before I'd agree with the idea of an increase in sales and Property Bee assisting with this. Who knows? Time will tell.

In summary, however, the Property Bee is wonderfully and unquestionably impartial right now. However, with a bung from HPC, the question remains of how would that affect its credibility? I think this is a fair consideration.

It would only be biased if it only showed falls. It shows all changes.

It helps buyers buy houses, people use rightmove and the bee because the want to buy a house.

Property Bee Front page quote http://www.property-bee.com/

Why does this help me?

This means you have a complete history of;

* When the property was put on the market

* Price changes (up and down) since the property was listed

* Whether the property has gone STC and come back onto the market

* Any changes to the details since the property was listed

Very useful information when negotiating, or checking up on what the Estate Agent says!

Its about buying houses, not a tool for talking the market in any particular direction.

Property Bee is a bit like a weather cam, not biased no matter who sponsors it.

Absolutely agree. I'm not suggesting that HPC sponsorship of Property Bee would affect its output in any way. That would be preposterous (I hope so anyway).

HOWEVER, will you not agree that if there was a bunch of dosh coming from HPC that detractors would find it easy fodder with which to throw mud?

Property Bee needs to be kept unafflicted by any vested interest, I reckon, clean of favours and sponsorship, lest there be allegations suggesting it has an "agenda".

Let me put it to you like this: if Rightmove suddenly bought Property Bee and assured you of its independence how confident would you genuinely be of its objectivity? Or worse still, the Daily Express? Still fair and square?

Okay, so let's say you remain objective and unaffected. But how do you think the more rabid members of this forum would feel? Or worse still, rabid members of HPC enemy forums?

To my mind, therefore, a forum sticky inviting individual donations to Property Bee should be as far as HPC involvement should go.

Rightmove have their own version, but it only shows falls. Still fair and square?

Go on Rightmove now, do a quick search and a red banner pops up saying 'Don't miss out on the best property buys! Sign up to receive the latest price reduced properties in your local area now!' CLICK ON IT

Propertybee v valuable tool. How much cash does it need per annum?

It's hosted on a dedicated server so that's about 1000-2000 quid a year. It's the maintenance and improvement of the code that's the biggie. The current breakage is quite easy to fix, a tweak here and there to the regular expressions to reflect Rightmove's HTML changes would do it. Beerhunter's laid out a roadmap of general improvements on the PB forum, they look like they'd need someone rather skilled to do them.

First question: Is anyone of HPC skilled enough to do some or all the changes/improvements and tweaks that Beerhunter has listed? Most important is to keep the basic tool running and coping with Rightmove's attempts to evade its data scraping.

Q2: Under what terms would they be willing to take it on?

Then we see if we can rustle up the readies to support that effort.

Regards
