Be good to have a software thread where we can exchange software download (legal freeware) links and descriptions and comments/ratings etc.

What think?

Good idea Mr P.

The Gimp, a fantastic photoshop clone without all the unnecessary bumf. If you want a simple intuitive image manipulation program this is it. Been using it for years, way better than the crappy software you get with digital cameras etc.

As well as GIMP, I've recently been using this tool...

This is what I love about HPC, the sense of community.

There is a lot of love in the room.

Just of to check out the 'Why Do Women Set Out To Make A Mans' Life Miserable?' thread.

Mentioned on here before where I discovered it but it has to be:

www.giveawayoftheday.com

Anybody collecting the archive?

Also I often www.zdent.com then filter by free software.

Best free file viewer xnview.

When you're asked for a program to open a weird file type, chances are this f*cker can read it!

Print Screen button - no software.

That only prints the whole screen, if you only want one small part of it you have to fanny about copy and pasting into Paint.

Launchy - excellent links / apps launcher triggered by alt-space. Most useful when customised.

CDBurnerXP - great little burning app.

FastCopy fantastic file move / copy app much quicker than windows native system and great over networks etc.

Image burn - burns all sorts of images to DVD. Brilliant and complements CDburner above well.

Magic ISO - great virtual dvd. Not as good as PowerISO but it's free so hey.

Locate32 - if you find yourself searching for files a lot then get this now. You realise windows is just rubbish at this!

Xplorer2 - free version is limited but still more than functional. switch two browsing pains on at once and sync to each tree as and when required - Better than Windows native file explorer.

Picasa - I think we all know this IMO essential for casual photographers!

Filehippo have a program called UDC which basically checks the status of all your freeware stuff (including hardware drivers MS programs) and alerts you to any updates which is cool.

For Mozilla Firefox....

Noscript - essential security especially if you like to visit non family orientated stuff  Also kills a heck of a lot of adverts, mostly the annoying ones too! Annoying for first week or so while you 'allow' your favourite sites.

Sxipper - useful password manager

Fastdial - set browser to start as blank page when it loads to get the most out of this but really good.

colorfultabs - great when you tie tab colours to server.

fasterfoxlite

Restart firefox - useful!

I have got a great little add on that preloads the next webpage when I near the bottom of the current page. i.e. when browsing forum threads I continually scroll down as if a huuge page. It WAS great but now it isn't working and I can't work out exactly what it is but will update when sorted it out...

Mozbackup - does a good job of backing Mozilla Firefox data including passwords, cookies (if wanted) add-ons etc. You decide what is backed up / restored. Great!

Sorry can't be bothered with links but a google search should quickly reveal the source of most stuff.

Good lad! I'll do a list sometime including all the links and descriptions. Promise.

Now then. Remote computing.

http://www.softlist.net/listing/network___..._computing.html

Which is the best to get? I'm looking at Laplink 5 for £35.

http://www.softlist.net/program/laplink_ev...e-software.html

Or PC File Transfer 1.1. About £30.

http://www.softlist.net/program/pc_file_tr...r-software.html

Anyone with any clue about all of this remote computing lark?

I agree, truecrypt is great.

KeyNote is fantastic software. Sure, you can fire up Word to write a document but how do you quickly get immediately to the chapter or part of your long document that you want?

http://www.tranglos.com/free/keynote.html

With KeyNote, you can nest documents sections in a tree like structure, even change the order with a few clicks. All stored in one single filename. And when you're finished, export it to rtf format which can be opened in Office, OpenOffice etc. where you can do your final formatting.

btw, the type of software we are talking about, some refer to it as pricelessware. i.e. not only free but even better!

Alt & Printscreen - Copies the contents of the current Window to the clipboard.
