LDV was today facing D-Day in its nine-month battle for survival – amid claims that more than 800 West Midland jobs may be sacrificed to China in an MG Rover-style “lift and shift†operation.

Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation, backed by broker Dr Qu Li of China Ventures, was said to be key to the future of the Birmingham van-maker and about 4,000 UK jobs, according to sources.

A period of exclusive talks with LDV administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers was set to expire today as fears grew that virtually all West Midland production jobs could be lost to China.

Have you ever driven an LDV?

This disturbingly shocking contraption should be consigned to Siberia, sinister device that it is.

so that'll be the LDV tooling for the Maxus that they got for nowt when they bought it off GM when Daewoo went bust right ? Not dissimilar circumstances.....

Of course this is what will happen - the Chinese are famous for it. Come in, do the due diligence of the assets when it's a going concern; interfere with the genuine buyers and wait for the business' to go under, then scupper the other rescue deals by interfering some more, then pick up the assets for nothing. Why is anyone surprised - this is exactly what was said would happen. This is why I have typically advised clients with distressed assets to think long and hard about a) letting Chinese bidders into the process (Malaysians and Koreans are just as bad) and B) believing anything they say. Half the clients don't listen and take the 'best offer' to find it blows up as per the above......

Parry, to be fair, the Maxus was about to be built in Russia ! And to drive, the Maxus (not the old Co;nvoy crap) is actually pretty good - certainly better than a Transit - the interior's rubbish in terms of fit but it's a nice enough van with decent enough punch and easy to load and park and reasonably economical - it's not the 'quality' of a Transporter but it's certainly (IMO) the match for a Vivaro.

Hmmmm . . . now unless you've just done a house move . . . I thought you were a banker not a white van man. Now if you say white van man I shall have the deepest respect for you.

LDV's are dire awfulness. However, I'll take your word on the Maxus.

I am a corporate finance lawyer. However, I like to help people do DIY and move stuff for my parents. So, I've done about 1,500 miles in the year and a half in rented LDVs. If it has wheels I like it - the missus always freaks out when she sees me come back from the rental place with a huge smile on my face, my elbow out of the window, ACDC on full whack and basically being WVM - it's fun to change into another skin for a while....

Ah-ha! Makes sense now.

We use them on 'orrible old sites. Usually as site buses to move people from the tea room to the excavators. When some ******* has nicked my Disco I end up pinching one of these things, yes a Convoy . . . awful thing . . . and quite frankly you may as well get in it and drive straight to A&E as you'll require intensive care within about 3 miles.

However . . . they are cheap and although non-essential bits do fall off, they do work well for site use.

Transit. Any day. Wonderful thing. Back bone of Britain!

The Chinese are desperate for jobs, they've lost quite a few in this jobless recovery.

An LDV full of Chinese bankers won't help.
