People In Leeds Haven't Had A Bin Collection For Two Weeks...

Recommended Posts

Don't know if this had been mentioned on HPC yet, but spare a thought for the people of Leeds, who are approaching the end of their second week of no bin collections. Several local tips have also shut so there is nowhere for some local people to take their rubbish - unless they drive into a neighbouring council area.

Someone dumped their bin bags on the council leader's doorstep, and - surprise, surprise - they were arrested, and will no doubt face an expensive prosecution all paid for by Johnny CouncilTaxPayer!

Surprised it didn't say "The ages of those arrested, or the value of their homes, were not revealed by police."

They no longer release home values in case someone notices they have dropped.

Did they however reveal immigration status?

the coucil have hired a private firm to do it whilst the normal lot are on strike.

Like I posted in another thread, the only difference in my neck of the wood (Leeds 4) was we missed a week, the next collection was a day late, and with a different colured private bin lorry from t'other side of the pennines.

Maybe the biggest complaint is that some locals refuse to allow Lancastrians to collect their bins.

I don't recall the War of the Roses ever been fought over refuse collection.

That said, as a Mancunian, I would never empty a Yorkshireman's bin. Principles are principles.

This country is a joke ruled by bin men and council officials. Few years back I had my rubbish bags collected from the alley way between houses, no probs, good service. I been out of UK for 4 years and now its a different ball game althogether. On a recent visit to my Mums in E.Anglia, she lives in cul the sac, the owners of houses had to line up bins like soldiers at the top of the road for the bin men to collect. No bin at the top of the road -- no collection. I had few beers at my mums and tried to put the bottles in the bin. No! she screamed, you cant do that, you must take it to Tescos for recycling. F@ck that Mum, are you paying for refuse collection or not?

Once my Mum put a torn letter in a public bin down High St, few days later Council official knocked at her door and told her off for throwing letter in the bin , apparantly its private rubbish and you cant throw it into a public bin!! I`m glad I`m out of the country.

I often visit Leeds 12 and can confirm for many its 3 weeks since they have had bin collection of any kind the council estate in LS12 had one 2 weeks ago but thats it. Bin Bags are strewn all over the place now with Cats Foxes and Vermin having a field day.

Im told the reason for the strike that has no end in sight is a directive from our Gov to grade all unskilled workers the same so they have averaged the pay of them all which includes Dinner ladies Council depot staff Bin men etc ,which results that take down the annual pay of many Binmen by 4K but increases many others with a netural cost to the council.

This is a National directive to affect all of England its just that Leeds came clean first (so to speak) with the instructions 15 months before they need to be implinented.

How about a thought for the binmen who (according to the one interviewed on Jezza Vine today) have been asked to take a pay cut from £18K a year to about £12K a year, so they are in line with care workers.

What the bejesus can you do with £12K a year ??? Would barely cover a subscription to the Radio Times, a Friday night fish supper, and the TV licence !

Binmen. ANOTHER "service" I do not need.

I can;

* burn the paper/cardboard waste

* compost the food waste, or put it out for the birds

* collect the plastic & whatever and take it to the recycle & landfill site every month or so

Thank you binmen and goodbye.

I am today on my 3rd week of no bin collection, I only have a small wheelie bin, and this only just lasts us a week, I now have about 6 black bin liners full of rubbish, and a recycling bin full to the brim.

I work 7 days a week, and do not have the time to take my bins to a tip.

I really did have symathy for the council workers, but now I really am starting to lose patience. <_< They are mighty lucky to have a job in the first place. £12K might be rubbish compared to their previous salary, but £12K is better than £0K!!! My partner was made redundant :( in July and just cannot get a job and we are currently living on my salary alone. LeL

Maybe they should think about a huge portion of the population who have lost their jobs and are living on the pittance that is called Job Seekers allowance!

Lets just hope that rats dont start making a home in my rubbish!!

Except £12k is less than benefits when you take into account all the other things they can claim, especially if they are the only earner in their household.

Would you be happy with a 60% pay cut, no I don't think so. How would you pay the mortgage, your bank isn't going to cut your payments by 60%. Maybe the heads of the council would like to take a 60% pay cut.

Will your partner be first in line for the new bin men vacancies?
