"CHERIE BLAIR has completed her journey from left-wing Liverpudlian to country chatelaine by spending more than £250,000 on antiques at Christie’s and Sotheby’s for her 18th-century pile in Buckinghamshire.

According to auction house insiders, Cherie has spent the past year and a half collecting Georgian and Regency furniture for the £5.75m home she shares with her husband, the former prime minister. The grade I-listed house in Wotton Underwood, near Chequers, was built in 1704 and previously owned by Sir John Gielgud, the actor. It has seven bedrooms, a 52ft double-height drawing room and ornamental gardens.

A senior source at Christie’s said: “It has a lot of space to fill. Cherie did not inherit much, so she’s building a historical hinterland of furniture. Between the two auction houses, I would think she has spent a quarter of a million [pounds] . . . and that would be very conservative.â€

While in power, Tony Blair championed contemporary British art and sought to reinvent Britain as a “young†country. His wife, however, has now opted for a more traditional approach...........

Sir Roy Strong, the former director of the Victoria and Albert Museum, said: “It’s the archetypal English trajectory; all she lacks now is a title. No doubt one of her children will marry into the aristocracy.â€

Since leaving office Tony Blair is estimated to have signed deals worth at least £10m, including a £5m advance on his memoirs. The Blairs now have six properties — with two houses in London, two flats in Bristol and a home in Durham."

Yeah, but he still has to wake up next to that beauty every morning. Still, maybe she included some sort of antique, early Victorian fluffing device amongst her purchases to give Tony a hand. Lucky boy.
