How Much Longer Until I Get My Deposit Back?

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me how long I have to wait to get my deposit back? I thought I'd read somewhere that under the TDS renters should receive their deposits back within 10 days of vacating properties, but I may be wrong.

Moved out 2 weeks ago, had copy of check out inventory with a letter from the Lettings Agent saying that they won't be returning the deposit until they have had the Landlord's approval to release it. (Check-out inventory is incorrect in several very minor areas, all of which I can prove with photos I took before I left).

Would appreciate advice on this one.

thanks

I would write a quick 'Letter Before Action' and get it in the post asap.

I did this quite a few years ago whilst at Uni. Went to the local magistrate's court and picked up a leaflet about how to take somebody to the small claims court. The leaflet had all the steps required, which started with a writing a letter.

It had an example letter by way of an illustration, and went along the lines of: write how much money is due and why it is due. Then finish with something like "If I do not receive payment within 14 days of receipt of this letter then I will take you to court". Send it recorded - you must ensure they sign to receive it. It doesn't have to be particularly formal or have any clever phrases in it. Just how much, why, time frame, consequence. Might only be one paragraph long.

In my case, the full deposit cheque came back by return of post :P
