Another Reason House Prices Had To Be High

Recommended Posts

Just looking to move - and eyeing up some particular properties. Hey-ho, I am a peasant but if I can rent one of the "bed on a shelf" style ones for £550 then that's me in the building I want to be in.

But wait, no.... it's unfurnished. OK, so I'll buy a lilo, I have few needs. So, sorted then... lilo in an unfurnished flatlet with a bed on a shelf, £550/month.

Then I looked up the council tax. In the building they are band C-E, I am hoping the bed on a shelf is a C. So £1300-1600/year council tax.

The Govt and councils loved raking in higher council tax when shiny flats were built and overpriced.

£800/month (rent, ct, minimal/basic bills) to sleep on a shelf on a lilo. Brilliant.

People can't afford to live in this country any more :(

I'll do it even though it means eating cold beans and not going out ...

(P.S. this isn't anywhere near London, local wages will be dire in the area)

To be devil's advocate for a moment, if you think of council tax as VAT on housing it is usually a pretty moderate rate as consumption taxes go, maybe 12% in your case.

I live in Luton. I'm a single 31 year old male. If I was unemployed I would get Local housing Allowance of around £550, plus zero council tax.

There are 277 properties available for rent in luton iteself (excluding nearby dunstable and the outlaying sub-towns) for under £500. And that's complete actual properties, not house shares.

Why? Just leave. Whats so great to make you stay? Is it the weather? The 3rd world immigrant invasion? What can it be.
