Hsbc Canada Shut Down For 9 Hours Today

Recommended Posts

I wanted to pay a bill this morning.... went online, everything looked normal, went to log on.... no service from 0300 to 1200 Sunday. System Upgrade.

That's nothing, it happens all the time. What did pee me off was you couldn't do online banking, tele-banking was shut down, ATM's would not accept requests for cash / info, and Interac, the Canadian version of Switch (debit) would not be processed at point of sale......

I phone them up, and to be fair there was someone in customer service, and was nonchalantly told not to worry, it would be back up at mid-day! When I asked why there was no warning she was blank.... maybe there had been a warning on their web page for a few days....

I'm not going all TFH about it, but as we had no cash, it's taught me a lesson.... always keep a float for emergencies.

What if I'd needed to get to, say, hospital and couldn't fill my car up?

Is it usual to lose all service for 9 hours?

My branch of Lloyds has been shut for about 24 hours now.

could be a routine maintenance or system upgrades and yes if planned that is exactly the time that it would be done.

they could also have suffered an attack or security breach which can lead to them freezing everything until security is restored.

or, they could just be donning their tfh's and testing that the panic button will freeze their entire system within seconds should they need to ;)
