What's the deal with hypnosis?

I've had it suggested to me as a way of curing a phobia, and don't know much about it.

Is it safe? What actually happens to you whilst you are under? Any personal experiences to relate?

Some people are easily hypnotised. Some people aren't. If you're crotchety, demanding, cantankerous, questioning or just have a very busy head you might not be hypnotisable. If you just like to go with the flow then maybe you can be. Personally I'm the former.

People think of it as some mystical altered mental state. It isn't. You're just relaxing your conscious mind and not really analysing what you hear. Imagine I sat you in front of a nice roaring fire after a long hard day and gave you a whisky and then made a friendly suggestion. You're still awake and still yourself, just more likely to take on board what I say than if I made the suggestion just after you found your brand new car had been scratched.

I can't personally say that I have had any positive effect from hypnosis. My brother responded well to it for his terrible acne apparently. I don't know the specifics though.

Wouldn't you look pretty in a nice pink dress and long flowing hair. You've always like shoes and can't help collecting them. Your starting to feel more awake now...<clap>

Hello X-Quorky, how how are you today?

We all experience it through self hypnosis while watching the television, otherwise it would be incredibly hard to concentrate on it.

Excellent point.

I'm a great believer in it. Many years ago I saw a demo by a surgeon whose speciality was to operate on patients that didn't want to or couldn't have general anaesthetic. I've allowed myself to be hypnotised, and I can do self hypnosis - which I recommend for all those insomniacs out there.

As skinty alludes : some people are more resistant than others - but anyone can be hypnotised if they want to be

I watched a programme on tv a few years ago, knee surgery and it didn't look pleasant. The lady was talking throughout the operation; if it was all genuine, which I have no reason to believe it wasn't.

I think the whole relaxation thing looks pretty good, I often find myself asking "where did that hour go" - thats self hypnosis I think. Strangely it happens when I'm programming. Quiet therapeutic.

Stage hypnosis - complete ********. Powerful peer pressure and the opportunity to act like a clown.

Speaking of clowns - has anyone read about Derren Brown's latest escapade? He plans to "incapacitate" viewers of his TV programme.

I've watched a couple of Youtube videos of people being induced very rapidly in the street, seemingly without permission or prior knowledge. The victim is usually engaged in a normal conversion - "oh can you help me find X?" which is interrupted by a quick "jolt", like a stern handshake followed by a command, typically "sleep". The "victim" then becomes very suggestible, they are often placed in ridiculous tea-pot posses.

Pretty dangerous stuff - if an individual was hypnotized in this manner and instructed to hand over possessions, would it be a crime?

Obviously this could be easily faked, but the videos appear fairly genuine. The bloopers are pretty amusing too.
