Might be helpful if you give a hint on whether you are looking to rent or buy, and what your monthly max spend is.

Otherwise I'll just say Elvet. Its beautiful, near the city centre, big old terraces, but make sure you get somewhere with parking if you have a car

Hi, Monthly spend is about £550.00 pound for either a 2 bedroom house or flat too rent.

Claypath

Gilesgate

Nevilles cross

were all very much student areas when I was there. Check who your neighbours are going to be! I wouldn't have wanted to live next door to me as a student.

Near the city centre is probably nicest IME . I'd look at where you are going to be commuting to as traffic can be a bit of a problem in some places.

Hi, If Brandon is a bad area, what are the good areas?

Why dont you go have a look if you are only in Sunderland? It is all better than Hendon so you will be OK.

..I just posted this on the other forum...

Bearpark: old mining place but ok. nice countryside, old railwaylines around for cycling

Bowburn: old mining, much larger than above, quite poor but not so bad

Brandon: similar to above, some rough bits, some new places. good sports centre.

Brasside: alright. near newton hall, private housing. nice pond for fishing. also near finchale abbey

Carrville: quite near to A1 motorway

Cassop: not too familiar, quite small, near bowburn/coxhoe

Claypath: some student lets, some pubs. obviously very near town (down) or uphill to gilesgate

Coxhoe: near bowburn (slightly further out) but similar

Crossgate: ok, v good school nearby, but busy road (for durham)

Croxdale: small village to south of durham, busy road but nice countryside. Near to 2 rivers.

Elvet: some posh new flats, pubs, very central

Esh Winning: a little rough. good cycle tracks into country

Framwellgate Moor: a few shops, nothing special

Gilesgate: up claypath from the city. Unfortunately not far from Sherburn Road estate.

Gilesgate Moor: unsure

Kelloe: unsure

Langley Moor: on the road to Brandon, alright

Littletown: dunno

Ludworth: dunno

Meadowfield: between Langley Moor and Brandon. Has that sports centre.

Nevilles Cross: near to town, good primary schools, on a167

New Brancepeth: a bit rough but out in country

Pittington: dunno

Pity Me: basically a roundabout on a167 with new houses. Near to Sainsburys out of town and Fram. Moor

Quarrington Hill: dunno, old mining I think.

Shadforth: dunno

Sherburn Hill: dunno

Sherburn Road: they're still swinging from the family trees up there. Riots a decade or so back. Nice big tesco.

Sherburn Village: quite nice despite nearness to above.

Shincliffe: nice!

Ushaw Moor: on way to Esh Winning on those cycle tracks!

West Rainton: dunno

Witton Gilbert: quite small. Their primary school footballers were known as "the hackers".

Let me know if you need any more help!

surfcat.

God I wish I was living back up there.

What about Brancepeth Village. I used to live there and it's a beautiful old fashioned village, lovely people, low crime and it's between Durham City and Crook!
