Millions Facing Famine In Ethiopia As Rains Fail

Recommended Posts

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/af...il-1779376.html

The spectre of famine has returned to the Horn of Africa nearly a quarter of a century after the world's pop stars gathered to banish it at Live Aid, raising £150m for relief efforts in 1985. Millions of impoverished Ethiopians face the threat of malnutrition and possibly starvation this winter in what is shaping up to be the country's worst food crisis for decades.

Estimates of the number of people who need emergency food aid have risen steadily this year from 4.9 million in January to 5.3 million in May and 6.2 million in June. Another 7.5 million are getting aid in return for work on community projects, as part of the National Productive Safety Net Program for people whose food supplies are chronically insecure, bringing the total being fed to 13.7 million.

Donor countries provided sustenance to 12 million Ethiopians last year, more than half of it through the UN's World Food Programme (WFP). Having passed that total only eight months into this year, and with the main harvest already in doubt, aid agencies fear the worst is still to come. "We're extremely worried," said Howard Taylor, who heads the Department for International Development's office in Ethiopia. DfID has given £54m in aid to the country this year, and Britain has also contributed through the EU. "This is exactly the time when we shouldn't turn away from the people in need," he said.

And this time there is unlikely to be rescue like in the 80's because there is no money because it's all been given to the bankers.

However when you have poor corrupt govt things like this keep happening and that's before we even start considering the failings of the govts in Africa.

Nothing to do with us anyway. We should leave Africa well alone.

Until they stop breeding there's no point in feeding them anyway. You only encourage them.

Seriously, who gives a f*ck? Perhaps if they got their act together, the likes of Zim wouldnt be a shell of its former self and be providing food for their nation, as was the case when the white man ruled their land.

Indeed. Until there are no poor/homeless people in this country all of our money (such as we have!) should stay in the Uk.

I refuse to give a penny to African (indeed any foreign) charities.

Give them food. But as a pre-condition agree on a programme of sterilization. All no-strings-attached food aid does is means come the next droughts/famine/failed harvests theres twice as many mouths to feed.

If we dont stop growth, nature will, and it will be a lot less 'humane'

The bankers and their puppet governments don't care about Ethiopians because they aren't deemed "economically productive" - i.e. they can't be bled for interest payments (a.k.a. transfer of real wealth) like the pliant sheep in the north.

If the bankers could get them to mortgage their villages, mud houses and meagre belongings in return for fiat money, they might consider helping them.

It's the same with Aids.

All this whining about people in Africa with Aids. Just STOP having sex FFS. It's not that hard.

And there's no point in us paying for treatment. We should leave well alone. They'll die quick enough as it is (of starvation).

Indeed. I don't mind that. If they want food we should make them pay for it with their land/time/labour. They have stuff we want - like gold/minerals/oil etc.

Everything we do should be for the interests of our own country.

Yes, but when the South African Health department tells you its avoidable by sucking on a lemon, then its easy to see why so many people do it anyway. Seriously, these people elected a PRESIDENT who had sex with an aids woman and said its ok as he took a shower afterwards. If thats leadership these people have no hope.

Indeed. Which is why we shoud put a big fence around them and leave them to their own devices.

You'll be wanting their cheap food and commodities though won't you? Whilst you might take an isolationist point of view re. Africa those that provide your sustenance are currently fighting over Africas rich resources.

We actually need Africa and Africans more than we need you.

Swaziland is one of the most effected countries:

Periodic surveillance of antenatal clinics in the country has shown a consistent rise in HIV prevalence among pregnant women attending the clinics. The most recent surveillance in antenatal women reported an overall prevalence of 42.6% in 2004. Prevalence of 28% was found among young women aged 15–19. In women ages 25–29, prevalence was at an alarming 56%.

One way or another it'll get sorted.

Those adventure trips to raise money always looked enjoyable, could be a good time for sponsorship?

Thinking of a motorcycle trip across Ethiopia or a skydive and mountain climb.

The worst form of charitable giving. Hate it on so many levels.

Maybe so, maybe not. Its irrelevant anyway. Your leaders will happily sell us oil, minerals, whatever, in exchange for the release of terrorists, or maybe a few guns that you can shoot each other with.

Oh, and if you dont want to deal with us, the Chinese will happily do the mercenary legwork for us and sell to us anyway.

Old fashioned thinking the world is a changing. Gadaffi is running rings around us and Chavez etc. are educating African leaders to tell us to get lost.

The Chinese too are thinking about themselves now.

The West is run by complete morons, but if you think a world led by the Chinese, Africans and South Amercians is going to be any better you're fooling yourself.

The best thing we can do is concentrate on fixing our own economies and trade with these nations for the things that we need, other than that its best to leave them to their own devices. That includes stopping aid, they've got more than enough labour/land/resources to be able to sort their own problems out.

We've been given for more than a generation and they're still in the gutter.

Perhaps it's just an inhospitable spot on our planet and people should not be living there...

My daughter works in Ethiopia, inc. in one of the severely drought-ridden areas. Her org. has been providing food and water, and drilling boreholes/constructing storage facilities to hold the rain if/when it does come. The people are mostly wandering herders, dependent on their animals, which are nearly all all dead or dying because there's nothing for them to eat. On top of all that they've recently had an outbreak of cholera, which the govt. refused to recognise for ages, apparently because there was an election coming up.

I was talking to her only yesterday, and she said they're damned whatever they do. If you give people the means to subsist in areas where people really shouldn't be living because it's so inhospitable, you're only perpetuating the problem.

OTOH how can you just leave them to die?

She said that growing certain crops would be possible to some extent, but the people don't know any other way of life and trying to turn them into farmers would be a monumental task.

I won't repeat what she's said many times about the govt. there and how it bothers to tackle any of this - but t*ts/ bull might give you a vague idea.
