noddage
Tomorrow I'm going for a trip to Germany. First weekend with a mate near Hannover, second weekend with friends in Berlin and final weekend just over the border with a pal in Zurich. In between weekends, I'm going to hop around on the train, stopping as I go. I'll be having a fair bit of nightlife at the weekends, so what I'm after is quirky, interesting little places to visit en route. Anything that would make me say "wow" or "goodness me" or "silly sods". Any recommendations? PS - my weekend itinerary is more or less fixed, but I've got whole weeks between each weekend, so I can go quite far off route to somewhere interesting. Thanks in advance. Reeperbahn in Hamburg or any of the more...erm... specialised clubs in Berlin will make you say "goodness me" and the Nazi Party Rally Grounds in Nuremburg will make you say "silly sods". (apart from that, Nuremburg itself is a lovely town to visit).
deadman
The most beautiful place I ever visited was Cochem in the Moselle. Best night life was Munchengladbach and it's 'street of a thousand bars'.
Boomer!
They have just built the worlds fastest roller coaster at the Nurdburgring, it is a compressed air launch and does 0-135mph in 2.5 seconds
twatmangle
In the east, you could go to Dresden which is nice. Weimar is nice. Jena is a nice student town with a historic centre. All close to each other.
Garry AKA Pod
The Rhine and Moselle valleys are nice, but give Koblenz a miss.
noddage
Thanks for the replies, I will investigate all of them. So far, very impressed with Germany. Visiting here must have been mega cheap before the pound collapsed.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
I like White Trash in Berlin. German hotels are generally v good - clean, comfortable, effectively run. http://new.whitetrashfastfood.com/
Guest Skinty
I would have recommended checking out the branches of Woolworths as it's like being transported back to the early 80's but I assume that there aren't any anymore.

They're still going! LINK. Every bit as taste-free as the UK operation.
Guest Skinty
They're still going! LINK. Every bit as taste-free as the UK operation. Yay! When the UK is being ridiculed again by the Germans for the being the sick man of Europe we can come back with the retort that at least our Woolworths went bankrupt! So at least we have some taste! Saying that, I have a nasty suspicion that mullets will make a comeback here in the next decade ...
Executive Sadman
Dont go to the beach. The germans love beaches and have hardly any of them. Last time i was in germany it was midwinter and the beach was still like something from Benidorm, replete with hordes of silly germans doing silly german things like going au natural into the water at about +2c. Thunderbird 900
My advice would be to visit Freiburg in the South.. It's a lovely city, famous for the clean cold water that runs in shallow gutters through the streets. It is situated near Switzerland and France and because of this is very cosmopolitan. Nearby is the Shwarzenwald-Black Forest. Take the train ride there, breathtaking views. Word of warning...the cuckoo clocks are quite expensive! ccc
If you have any interest in football you must go to a Bundesliga game. Again - they do it so much better than over here. Terracing, beer, top up cards so you don't even have to use cash and queue for a bevvy at half time. And you can get all this for a top game for about €10 - if you want to stand - which you do coz it is so much more fun. Brilliant. Even if you don't like football well worth a visit to any of the big grounds. The stadium in Munich is immense.

1929crash
Potsdam is well worth a visit to see Frederick the Great's palace, and the miniature wonderland in Frankfurt. 1800 square metres of roads, trains, buildings controlled by 150 computer operators. If the Germans think it is safe - it is safe !! Nuff said. The joke in the UK is that teams outwith the top tier, or rugby that have terracing are deemed to be 'safe'. It is ridiculous. Also at these same grounds you have concerts where tens of thousands all jump up and down with no barriers or anything - and that is 'safe'. Nothing to do with safety IMO - all about control. Easier to put/arrest/track people in little individual boxes than in a mass group. I don't have a season ticket anymore. After being to a few German games in the last few years it just pisses me off what they expect people to pay in this country - and the amount they charge. They treat you like a child but charge you a fortune. I can do other things with my money. Anyway - think we have taken this a little off tangent !! Germany is a great place. Never met anyone who has been who has said anything else.
