£1.50 A Month For Mobile Broadband.

Seems a great deal.

You only get 500mb worth which is more than enough for general browsing minus videos.

Probably not good enough to replace your full broadband but a very good backup or away from home connection.

No need to spend cash on wifi at hotels etc.

Seems a great deal so thought id highlight it.

Sounds like a great deal.

I would suggest a money saving section but it would get spammed with the frequent "convert videos to mp3" posts.

I can't quite get over the degradation in picture quality you get with mp3s.

Thanks cells. Another neat trick is to get hold of an Pay as you go O2 iPhone SIM. Once topped up with a tenner you get a years surfing for free (it is against t&cs to use in anything other than an iPhone though). They work fine in a unlocked dongle - you can get an unlockable dongle for a fiver delivered here:

http://www.3dongle4free.co.uk

(they are legit although their secure payment is pretty shoddily set up). More details and unlocking here:

I would suggest you don't surf with IE with above set up though as O2 seem to be able to tell. Firefox with a user agent switcher seems to be fine though as is tethering via an iPhone.

I picked up a iphone sim with the credit already applied off eBay for a just over £5 which when coupled with the dongle above means a year's surfing for just over a tenner (and includes £10 of calls on O2). I have been using this as my main internet connection for nearly six months now.

MP3 picture quality is appalling, a very lossy codec.

All computer programmers are overpaid and useless.

I bought a computer once. It didn't work.

Is it free net on those sims?

Or those sims just charge a ridiculously low figure per MB for net?

Either way this legit £1.50 pm for 500mb is a good deal for those that are not very technical.

Free net - there is supposed to be a limit of around 500mb/month but I haven't discovered that yet (downloading 500MB in 24 hours will get you a warning text to your dongle though).

I agree my solution is not for the faint of heart/non-technical and will take you around a hour to set up if you know what you are doing. The orange deal sounds like a good one although personally I might wait a month or so to see if Orange has the capacity to take on all of these new customers. Three's became total garbage after they started introducing cheap 18month contract deals (hence the move to the iphone sim solution).

Good job mp3 is an audio codec then.

Just what I was thinking. Time to Geek up a bit!

mp3=MPEG layer 3 which was designed by the Moving Pictures Expert Group (MPEG) to carry the audio track of MPEG 2 compressed video. It was so good at doing it (10 years ago at least) that people realised you could also use it just to compress music tracks with no video....and the mp3 player was born.

This has got nothing to do with the price of houses, but it is good for once to know that I know a little more about something than some of the regular posters here. ;)

Very nice heads-up indeed, will try that, my 3 mobile broadband contract ends soon thank the Lord, it's like a dripping tap ... if it even comes on at all.

If you are talking about the picture quality of images when surfing over 3g, then that's the transparent proxy they punt all web traffic through. You might see your status bar show 1.2.3.4 now and again which I suspect is the proxy/redirect. Use ssh/squid if you want to keep your internet habits out of your 3G provider's reach.

I bought into the dream with a three.co.uk £15/month USB with 15GB/month transfer .... which I can only use 3x per year because I can't get a signal at home. I was hoping it'd be good enough to replace my home broadband as I don't have excessive requirements, but it's not. The promise is 3GB transfer speed, my home broadband rarely breaks through 2GB, so if it had worked it'd have been ideal. But no. Signal is variable. Unusable at home, I can only use it when I visit my parents (who have no internet connection), thank god it does get a good signal there (on it now in fact). Watched 4OD this morning (Benefits Busters) OK on it too.

No good to me, I downloaded 12GB YESTERDAY.

That'll be porn. My PC is on 24/7, right beside me. I am online actively about 20 hours/day 7 days/week. I work entirely online, my entire income is from online. I use just over 5GB in peak months.
