Realistbear
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8224520.stm UK population now more than 61m Crowds of people The UK population is now growing by 0.7% every year The UK population has passed 61 million for the first time, according to the Office for National Statistics. There were 408,000 more people living in the UK in 2008, taking the population to 61.4 million. For the first time in almost a decade, changes in birth and death rates have overtaken immigration as the biggest factor affecting population growth. Overall migration levels - the numbers of people arriving minus those leaving - fell by 44% to 118,000. This is the lowest level since EU enlargement. The ONS said this latest increase in population was the biggest in nearly 50 years. In 1962 the population rose by 484,000 and in 1947 population levels rose by 551,000. There are now 1.3 million people aged over 85, a record number, who make up 2% of the total population. The British people can be confident that immigration is under control Immigration Minister Phil Woolas There were 791,000 babies born in the UK last year, an increase of 33,000 on 2007, and a figure which is almost twice the rise recorded at the start of this decade. The population is now growing by 0.7% every year, more than double the rate in the 1990s and three times the level of the 1980s. Good thing its all under control--at least according to a New Labour minister.

OK My posts keep getting deleted very funny Anyway This information for those who have read my reply/ies will know means only one thing If these figures can be collaborated House prices must go up from here and quite considerably and until the troubles start at this rate of increase prices will rise by 20% or more per annum and this is irrespective of wage inflation. Rents must start to rise very soon. I am changing my status to neither until further investigation.
Mick Dundee
Well ever since the smoking ban, nobody apart from p1ssheads go out much any more. TV has seemed to be the Simon Cowell show and Jordon show, so I ask you what else are consenting couples going to do. We do it like, they do it on the Discovery Channel. Hence the sharp rise in Birth Rates.
Flat Bear
Young virulent immigrants that arrived earlier. This is already known but the increase of around half a million recent imigrant births should have been partially offset by the negative migration as many returned home. Infact the ONS have somehow come up with an increase in migration of over 100k? How can we see a positive increase in migration when we are in an economic downturn of this scale? Are people coming to this country without jobs? If they are where does the money come from?

Mick Dundee
In some areas of the country 1 in 4 of births are to foreign parents. Yeah, but that means 75% of births are from native parents. Bob Loblaw
"Britain's borders are stronger than ever before. Our border controls in northern France are stopping record numbers of migrants reaching our shores - 28,000 in 2008. It was probably the same 2000 people trying to get in 14 times each. These figures suggest that the hard working eastern Europeans are going home. Unfortunately what is still being allowed is the unproductive being allowed to come in from non-EU countries as either asylum seekers, students (who then disappear into the black economy) or wives and families of existing immigrants, all which are a negative effect on the well-being of the UK. Furious
Immigration IS the key driver. Bear in mind that many of the immigrants who settled in the UK over the last 10 years have taken British citizenship (now given away with boxes of Cornflakes at all major retailers). Supporting evidence is the top names list, family size by ethnicity, foreign marriage data. In a recent discussion with ONS workers at a demography conference I was told that the official figures for the UK population based on forecasting from the 2001 census are way off. They undercounted in 2001, and there has been unprecedented immigration (legal and illegal), since then. At best guest the population is closer to 68million, and around 30% of all people under 5 are children of 'non-White British' (census tag) parents. Clearly immigration driven

Of the 70% would you be surprised to learn that at leat 1 in 4 of them will be "Ginger". Yes thats right it equates to 1 in 4 of all children born from "White British" and "Mixed Race" British have Ginger hair. With as many as 50% of the "Mixed Race" birth alone are born "Ginger". We are being overun by the faulty "Ginger" gene. Yipee.

Telling stats though (not the ginger one, although if that's true I'm scared). What I find amazing is that we're talking about a huge ethnic demographic shift in just the space of a few years. I think it's safe to presume that in 2001 about 10% of all kids under 5 were 'non-White British', now it's close to 30%. In a nation of 68 million people that's a massive shift in a very short period of time. If the trend continues and we don't see more integration then you may well see a day in our lifetimes where political parties are formed and supported by specific ethnic or religious groups, and sweeping changes to the British way of life brought about through th demographic process. This could mean the end of Conservative and Labour party dominance of politicl Britain and....oh wait.....seems that mass immigration is a good thing after all. Dave Spart
Why is the birth rate suddenly rising so fast? Possibly immigrants bringing their fertility patterns in with them. Could be a general shift in indigenous attitudes, too.
