The UK population is now growing by 0.7% every year

The UK population has passed 61 million for the first time, according to the Office for National Statistics.

There were 408,000 more people living in the UK in 2008, taking the population to 61.4 million.

For the first time in almost a decade, changes in birth and death rates have overtaken immigration as the biggest factor affecting population growth.

Overall migration levels - the numbers of people arriving minus those leaving - fell by 44% to 118,000.

This is the lowest level since EU enlargement.

The ONS said this latest increase in population was the biggest in nearly 50 years.

In 1962 the population rose by 484,000 and in 1947 population levels rose by 551,000.

There are now 1.3 million people aged over 85, a record number, who make up 2% of the total population.

The British people can be confident that immigration is under control

If these figures can be collaborated

House prices must go up from here and quite considerably and until the troubles start at this rate of increase prices will rise by 20% or more per annum and this is irrespective of wage inflation. Rents must start to rise very soon.

This is already known but the increase of around half a million recent imigrant births should have been partially offset by the negative migration as many returned home. Infact the ONS have somehow come up with an increase in migration of over 100k? How can we see a positive increase in migration when we are in an economic downturn of this scale? Are people coming to this country without jobs? If they are where does the money come from?

These figures suggest that the hard working eastern Europeans are going home. Unfortunately what is still being allowed is the unproductive being allowed to come in from non-EU countries as either asylum seekers, students (who then disappear into the black economy) or wives and families of existing immigrants, all which are a negative effect on the well-being of the UK.

So 70% are of White British parents. Like I said before hardly remarkable considering "Non-White" parents generally give birth to more children. Of the 70% would you be surprised to learn that at leat 1 in 4 of them will be "Ginger".

What I find amazing is that we're talking about a huge ethnic demographic shift in just the space of a few years. I think it's safe to presume that in 2001 about 10% of all kids under 5 were 'non-White British', now it's close to 30%. In a nation of 68 million people that's a massive shift in a very short period of time.

If the trend continues and we don't see more integration then you may well see a day in our lifetimes where political parties are formed and supported by specific ethnic or religious groups, and sweeping changes to the British way of life brought about through th demographic process. This could mean the end of Conservative and Labour party dominance of politicl Britain and....oh wait.....seems that mass immigration is a good thing after all. Vive l'differance
