Things Of The Past.

Recommended Posts

I have been thinking, there are many things we have taken for granted over the years that are slowly being taken away or no longer available, such us:

- Final salary pensions.

- Redundancy payments.

- A job for life.

- Affordable house prices.

Any more you can think of?

Integrity

Respect

Valuing people for their human achievements rather than their watch, car and etc.

Wholesome food at a decent price

Varied entertainment on TV

Actors who could act rather than pose. (Olivier; Gielgud; Richardson; Hordern; Wolfit; Ustinov; Spencer Tracey; Heston; to name but a few)

People in "Bands" who could actually play an instrument

Singers who could

The odd politician of value

Craftsmen and Women

Real Racing Drivers

Culture

Decent writing

Punctuation

English

(How depressing! The bloody list is endless!)

:(

Laying the fire.

Smoking in the pub.

Driving home from said pub (seatbelts? This ain't a Volvo.) in an undesignated driver state.

(As a responsible sort of fellow, dad used to take regular "rests" on long drives like holidays, no powersteering, fairly takes it out of you. What was his on the road motto again? .... oh, yeah. "Best, landlord!")

Family "flitting" without a second thought, as and when the mood (or need) struck.

Sliderules for hard sums.

Various sorts of graph paper.

Every Sunday like the day after a 15-megaton airburst.

Waiting for the radiogram to warm up.

Cycling round the Lakes for a couple of weeks "in charge" of all one's younger sibs at the age of fifteen.

Americans.

Although I fully expect the rag and bone man to make a reappearance any day now, on his flatbed cart thing dragged by a really scruffy horse, blowing his bugle fit to bust.

Ah, someone beat me to it.

Apparently, if you want a trip down memory lane, feed your dog bone meal then leave the poo for a very long time.

Skis

Real "downhill Alpine skis" lots of techique high speed ski-ing

Have gone although i still ski on my Rossignol alpines

Now its parabolic or spatula skis the so slow tourist skis

The problem is that is all they seem to sell today

They are skis for beginners fair enough for the "Brits" on the "green pistes" or "baby pistes" but they do tend to ventue out onto the "real" high speed slopes and this can be dangerous as you have to slow down all the time trying to avoid them it does tend to spoil the fun

A packet of Pacer mints. Nothing comes close.

Yes, never been replaced. Softmints come close but a pacer was something else. Lost them in about 1984?

People being famous for having a talent.

People being famous for having done something for the good of mankind, rather than having big tits.

I'm glad someone else finally remembers them! No-one else I speak to has heard of them.
