@contradevian
English village quails at prospect of new oil rush Also reported on tonights BBC London News.. COLDHARBOUR, England, Aug 21 (Reuters) - The affluent English county of Surrey -- with its rolling hills, historic tiled houses and ancient oak woodlands to the south of London -- may not seem the most obvious place to prospect for oil.But two companies are working together to drill an exploratory well there and say a change in tax law could help to step up exploration elsewhere in British shires. They face stiff local opposition. Residents in the village of Coldharbour, which has 250 inhabitants, one pub and no store, are less than keen to have a nodding donkey in view of their homes. "The oil is over there, under the church in the village," said Stuart McLachlan, standing on a wooded hill and pointing in the direction of Coldharbour's Victorian stone church. http://in.reuters.com/article/oilRpt/idINLL14724620090821 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10...ssex-Texas.html Its going to be cold and dark in this country if rampant Nimby'ism and obsession with pwoperdee prices continues to run rampant. CokeSnortingTory
When oil gets low, they'll drill in the garden of Buckingham Palace if they have to.

AteMoose
Interesting it is tax that stops people drilling onshore...... If there is oil in the north sea how much is still under the UK?
blankster
When oil gets low, they'll drill in the garden of Buckingham Palace if they have to.No, they'll drill in at an angle from beyond the grounds, I reckon!

jammo
The idea that NIMBYs wield such amazing powers is just a long con by the media. When it's small fry, they'll roll over eventually to pander to it, but given a superpower (an oil company) they'll soon get vetoed/ their whole village/town relocated if necessary.
