Slowdown signs - More idled ships set sail for scrap yards Sunday, 23 Aug 2009 It is reported that more and bigger vessels of 4,000 TEU capacity are now heading for scrap yards as idle global tonnage has swelled to a record 1.34 million TEUs or 10.4% of the world’s cellular capacity.

According to reports here, there are 538 idle ships including 183 totaling 733,000 TEUs controlled by carriers and 355 ships or 608,000 TEUs run by charterers or other non operating owners.

The containership capacity sold for scrap so far this year exceeded 275,000 TEUs. As many as 148 ships have been scrapped so far this year.

Looks busy to me. I count 12 laid up.

I've been trying to post a link but it all goes a bit weird, Daily mail, telegraph and thisissouthdevon.co.uk have all run stories, generally 12 oil tankers in the bay.
