The Swiss Army Knife celebrates its 125 year old birthday today

I have a ten year old basic model

Bottle opener corkscrew and knife they have never let me down

Good invention made to last well done

Happy Birthday

"In 1891, Karl Elsener, then owner of a company that made surgical equipment, discovered to his dismay that the pocket knives supplied to the Swiss army were in fact made in Solingen (Germany). In that age of nationalism, Elsener set out to manufacture the knives in Switzerland itself."

1891 + 125 = 2016

Sharp as a razor; strong as an axe. The Puma White Hunter. Mine is 40 years old, and good as the day it was bought.

Do you have a large patio?

Blade of the Puma knife is exactly 6". Is that outside the law now? The knife was made for serious outdoorsmen, and will split small logs, and cut the top off cans. I've seen film of men shaving with them. Sold in the USA and very pricey.

I feel a bit inadequate now, with my little three inch.

1 Did the Swiss ever have an army?

2 Did it ever fight anybody?

The various regions that make up Switzerland did have some fairly heavy-duty dust-ups.

If you get an opportunity to visit the Castle at Sion in Valais, there is a decent little museum which describes the various nasty wars they had.

And if you ever go walking/climbing in that part of the world, you will very quickly appreciate why warfare is not high on the list of priorities.

One of my main criteris for buying anything, is would Maguyver have one? Never been a big fan of Swiss Army knives, though have got a few. Prefer Leathermans, annoying that ebay has stopped selling all that stuff now but, has, I suppose, stopped me being less tooled up. I bought some gadget from an American seller and they sent me a huge flick knife by mistake.
