Nassim Taleb - The Black Swan

Recommended Posts

For those of you that don't know him, or missed his Newsnight appearance.

This is an interview he gave in the last week (with Nouriel Roubini), where he basically says Benanke et al should be fired, and the stimulus plan is stupid.

Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4GsCXnL9LE

Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5qbo7i_VMQ

Really interesting that he met with David Cameron today. And from what he said on Newsnight he is impressed with Cameron and it seems it will be the first of many meetings.

Interesting that he would trust 82 yr old Volker to run the fed more than he does Bernanke.

So we know where he thinks IRs should be.

I dont see the Black Swan advising the Dark Cloud. He would be totally incapable of listening.

Why Dark Cloud? I agree that I don't see him as a listener. He's another robotic Blair type I suspect.

The tory plan is to wall the rich away in gated communities and hand the bill to whoever is dumb enough/can't get away to pay it.

Always is.

Abandon any delusion that Cameron or anyone else in the Conservative party is the least bit interested getting to the bottom of what has happened and punishing those responsible. It ain't gonna happen

Have you read Taleb's smug, insufferably self-congratulatory/flattering, statement-of-the obvious and deeply repetitive books?

Christ knows why I bothered really... still he's minted and here we are slagging him off on a tiny little internet forum... so I suppose the joke's on us really.

He is a git though.

I agree that the conservatives will be no better than labour, and I'm not a tory either btw.

But why would Cameron meet with Taleb? unless he is trying to understand the root causes. Taleb's view of complex systems being unstable, and the need to apply a precautionary principle in markets, coupled with a more diverse and therefore shock resistant financial ecosystem is part of the solution.

At least Cameron seems to be getting closer to understanding that the increase in the money supply over decades causes the booms and busts, by means of pumping up bubbles.

I don't agree with everything Taleb says, but I'd rather the next leader of this country, meets with Nassim Taleb, than Alan Greenspan.

Can't see Brown meeting with anyone with a view different to his own.

National bankruptcy in weeks then.

Bill Gross' PIMCO and Warren Buffet have come out warning about US dollar troubles ahead.

Here's Buffet's. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/19/opinion/...t=cse&scp=3

His last words made me chuckle. 'The dollar’s destiny lies with Congress.' So, he's putting the blame on politicians rather than the privately owned Federal Reserve, ha.

As for Cameron, if he wants to know what's going on and what's on the horizon, he doesn't need to consult a fortune teller because both Clarke and his slimy sidekick Osborne were at Bilderberg. I'm sure one or both have told him.

We have finely tuned moral compasses though unlike the proles we command ;)

Command?

Since when is telling people what they want to hear for a living a position of command?

:lol::lol:

p.s. you are faling at it. Some anarcho capitalist rumblings would get my vote* - hop to it.

*not really.

Taleb's books can be summarised as "Shit happens." A concise review would read "No shit!".

I liked him in these CNBC interviews though, he's obviously mellowed a bit (for some 9 figure reason).

Yeah, but Sarkosy is talking to Stiglitz:

http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2009/08/18...on_30109977.php

To this end the high-level international Commission on Measuring Economic Performance and Social Progress has been established by French president Nicholas Sarkozy. The Commission is chaired by Joseph E Stiglitz, with Amartya Sen as the chairman's advisor and Jean-Paul Fitoussi as coordinator.

...trying to come up with an alternative measure of increase in quality of life not based on GDP growth.

Are Cameron talking to Taleb and Sarkosy talking to Stiglitz code for the way in which this will play out, e.g.

1. UK taking the pseudo-growth inflate approach, keeping an eye on it all going wrong given how close we are to the edge?

2. Europe prepared to deflate sensibly and have their population laze around in vinyards being philosophical?

I wonder if one day we will see Cameron not as the Dark Clound, but as the Black Swan.
