Could you please stop referring to Labour's policies as 'liberal'.

Labour are an authoritarian government, not a liberal one.

Will you be happy with us calling them socialists?

Nu. Lab is about as socialist - or as liberal - as Ghengis Khan. I call them 'liberalistas' by which I mean pseudo-liberal. The best group name for them is "Guardianistas". As this is their mouthpiece to the world.

Good point - it should only be in Jesusland (the mad middle bit of America) that Liberal is an insult. Can't we have some sort of filter installed on this website that substitutes "Liberal" for "Whig"?

Anyone living in this great country of ours should be happy to accept that they are "Liberal" - even if they vote Conservative. In fact, I think you could be "Liberal" and vote BNP.

We are a Liberal Secular Representative Monarchy. Aren't we?

We're all Whigs.

I mean you are, I'm not: I'm special.

I feel so much better being a "guardianista" rather than a "daily mail reader" and all the moronic, right wing, CSE educated, hate for anyone who is not a wasp (or wife of), that stands for.....but hey, maybe thats just me ;)

The problem is that the term liberal can be applied to two very different things politically. In terms of social policy (dealing with people) they are authoritarian (more state control) (ie the opposite of liberal) but in terms of fiscal policy (dealing with money) they are liberal (less state control) (ie liberal) (well until recently anyway).

I am a Labour supporter but also a liberal with a small l (as are most of our members)

Change of mind.

You can only call them liberal while burning them. Is that a fair compromise? :P

Did you read about the previous Gaurdian editor, can't remember his name but had an Asian name. He used to have run it past Alistair Campbell first before going to print. It is not even news, merely the morning PR release from a failing government. I shall find out his name this morning.

At least the Mail prints what it likes, even if most of it is shit.

I'm sorry to say, but to me any one who STILL raves about the Labour party does not deserve a vote.

That's summat else. Why did a non-elected bod have so much say in what went on? Talk about the hand up the back working them. <_< Tony B could not even go to the loo, without ACs say-so.

Brilliant, you have perfectly illustrated the polytechnic-common-room level viewpoint of the Guardianista. "I feel so much better" than those not accepting a liberal-left agenda, who by my definition are CSE educated moronic racists.

Actually, reading between the lines, surely you are actually a right-winger who is projecting an image of a prejudiced, fascistic Leftie, in order to discredit Lefties??

Either way, the Guardian is the broadsheet version of The Voice, a paper for ethnic minorities "employed" in the public sector. I wouldn't wipe my ar$e on it.

Socialism is all about social control. How can it be liberal?

spot on.

I bloody hate socialists with a passion....they really do make me extremely angry.

Especially this lot.

They pontificate about how everybody should live such+such a fashion, but when it comes to the crunch, they are not prepared to do the same themselves.

it's so much like soviet politics it's unbelievable.

To think mickael gorbachev was warning us about this 20 years ago seems a little absurd doesn't it!!!

the russians+germans have been down this path before, and the people were overjoyed to be rid of it.

maybe it's time for people to move en masse to germany!!!!

honeckerism/stalinism whatever you want to call it causes counties to rot away.....so why not make it rot a bit quicker by upping sticks??

leave gordon to play out his little fantasies of supreme commander on his own.

we don't have to play his game you know(for now anyway!!)

Agree, they are not liberal. Wasn't the man just running the country unelected?

I think what people mean is 'liberal left'. I am no fan of them, they have stolen the party of the working man.

Its not new.

The left always needs rebranding.

Once people saw socialism as a failed ideology, new labour rebranded itself as a 'social democrat' party in the late 80s. Now people are getting tired of that its moving to liberalism. Once they have defiled and bastardized the meaning of that it will change to something else, probably 'green' politics. Be warned, its still socialism/totalitarianism/facism.

you are right that social control is the opposite of liberalism, but only with respect to fiscal policy. It is therefore entirely possible to be a socialist liberal - (state pays for everything, and there are very few controls on personal freedom). This is the opposite of what labour is (liberal authoritarian - privatize everything and control everyone). What we need is a different term for a social liberal - what the Americans call a libertarian.

That's why I call them Neo-Liberal.

They are "liberal" in certain aspects; but comparisons with "The Liberal" party and its policies and aspirations as espoused by such as Gladstone, Campbell-Bannerman, Asquith and Lloyd George are facile.

However, many of the Bleeding Hearts-Do Gooder tenets of ZanuLab since the Loony left influenced far too much of NuLab policy, are not only tinged with liberalism, they are soaking in the bloody stuff!
