Uk Pirate Party Launches

Recommended Posts

The party is registered!

The long-awaited news has finally arrived, the Pirate Party UK is now officially registered as a political party! This means we can raise funds, have Pirate Party Candidates at the next general election, and do all the other things that political parties do. Getting to this stage has been a long process, we've had to elect officers, raise funds, fill out forms, meet with some (very helpful) people at the Electoral Commission, and learn far more about electoral law and the special party funding rules that apply to Gibraltar than any same person would ever want to.

Now the party can really start. It's time for us to tell the world that we exist, to recruit members, raise funds and gear up to fight the General Election. The officers and web team have built the framework that the party needs to get going, now it's time for YOU to make things happen. Join the party, tell the media about the party, tell your friends about the party, take part in policy and news debates on the forum, join our Facebook group, donate or set up a regular payment to provide financial support, set up a branch in your constituency, school or workplace, join the specialist workings groups for members with key skills like lawyers and journalists and volunteer to take part in canvassing and campaigning in your constituency at the general election...

The success of Britain's newest party depends on you, the members!

Let's give them a seat or two, as we need to break the back which are the UK's draconian intellectual property rights and copyright laws... or at the least have a voice of reason in the parliament.

I prefer the good old Monster Raving Loony Party manifesto myself...

However, I must admit that I've tried the facebook pirate language option, and try my best to participate in talk like a pirate day (sept 19th) I'm guessing this lot aren't about those things though...

Edit: from the Pirate Party blog:

The world is changing. The Pirate Party understands that the law needs to change to match the realities of life in the 21st century.

We have 3 core policies:

• Reform copyright and patent law. We want to legalise non-commercial file sharing and reduce the excessive length of copyright protection, while ensuring that when creative works are sold, it's the artists who benefit, not monopoly rights holders. We want a patent system that doesn't stifle innovation or make life saving drugs so expensive that patients die.

• End the excessive surveillance, profiling, tracking and monitoring of innocent people by Government and big businesses.

• Ensure that everyone has real freedom of speech and real freedom to enjoy and participate in our shared culture.

Let's have a real Pirate manifesto, with a bit of blood, guts and yard-arm in it!!

I think you should forget about this thread if all you want to do is poke fun.

This is a worldwide movement, and they are here to fight for your rights; less legislation and protection for patents, copyright, and privacy.

At least somebody is trying to make our lives a little less constrained.

Sweden's Pirate Party captures Euro seat

Sweden's Pirate Party, striking a chord with voters who want more free content on the Internet, won a seat in the European Parliament, early results showed on Sunday.

The Pirate Party captured 7.1 percent of votes in Sweden in the Europe-wide ballot, enough to give it a single seat. The party wants to deregulate copyright, abolish the patent system and reduce surveillance on the Internet.

"This is fantastic!" Christian Engstrom, the party's top candidate, told Reuters. "This shows that there are a lot of people who think that personal integrity is important and that it matters that we deal with the Internet and the new information society in the right way."

Previously an obscure group of single-issue activists, the party enjoyed a jump in popularity after the conviction in April of four men behind The Pirate Bay, one of the world's biggest free file-sharing website.

The case cast a spotlight on the issue of internet file-sharing, a technique used to download movies, music and other content. The defendants have called for a retrial.

Despite the similar names, the party and the website are not linked. The party was founded in 2006 and contested a Swedish general election that year, but received less than one percent of the vote.

Engstrom credited the party's appeal to young voters for its success. "We are very strong among those under 30. They are the ones who understand the new world the best. And they have now signalled they don't like how the big parties deal with these issues."

The Pirate Party will take up one of Sweden's 18 seats in the 785-seat parliament. "We will use all of our strength to defend personal integrity and our civil rights," Engstrom said.

If you are fearful that someone will steal your idea, don't tell anyone. It worked for Coke "secret formula" it's not my responsibility to make sure nothing I use was discovered first by someone else. Even if it was so what?
