Tampa's Tent City

Recommended Posts

Interesting, and worrying, item on The World Today now about the growing tent city in Tampa Bay/St. Petersburg in Florida. Lots of middle class white collar types gone from living a good life to living in a tent with all their belongings.

Tourism and Real Estate driving the Florida economy meaning vast unemployment in those areas. 300,000 empty homes in Florida.

Very sad.

If a link props up tomorrow I will post.

Interesting but predictable in a country with no safety net. The West got where it was through exploitation. First, it exploited its own working classes, and then when they wised up it started exploited third world workers. Now, it looks very much like the tables are turning.

But the weather is good enough in Florida to do that all year round. A bit TOO hot in the summer. Where houses are $1000 and less (Detroit), the winters are very cold so you need plenty of money for heat.

I posted elsewhere yesterday that I saw a similar documentary on French tv at the weekend re. homeless in the US. It centred around LA and the town of Stockton in particular. Scary stuff. There was an EA working for Century21 who was sleeping in her car each night in a guarded tent park. She'd lost her 4 bed home 2 yrs previously. Divorce then a short illness in hospital that wiped out her life savings.

Re. Tampa. Dr, Bubb, your charts seem to show a fall to around 2003 prices. I take it you're expecting further falls? Possibly back to 97-99 levels ?

Does anyone know why people are not squatting the empty properties? Seems INSANE

People in the US have a tendancy to use guns to help enforce their property rights.

Would you be a squatter in a dangerous country where every other person owns a gun, there are 35,000 shooting deaths each year and an enshrined legal right to defend one's property as well as one's person? (In other words the owner could enter, then shoot you dead and claim self-defence - maybe putting a hammer in your twitching hand first before dialling 911 - police are too overloaded zipping up body bags to give such a call any detailed scrutiny, you might even get a commendation for shooting a "felon" dead).

Why not just go back to the unsold but foreclosed houses?

Or are US bankers also ninjas?

Bank foreclosure depts are not usually staffed by psycho ninjas, but you might be squatting happily in one of the houses (not the #2 kind of squatting) when the bank quietly auctions the property to a ninja, or Tony Soprano type character, who does not want a sitting tenant who pays nothing, except providing free chainsaw-cutting practise.
