I read your thoughts about our "Piss up Hols" & you know my views on "Jerk in a Merc/BMW Bas*ard"..............It was great while we helped America Ar*e rape the World. Trouble is the rest of the World WOKE UP!

No one in their right mind will "Invest" in any shi*e coming out of Wall St or the "City". The games up, gafe is blown.........sure we can "QE" for awhile, but only for 12 months or so.

We have not thought long & hard, we didn't renew our Atomic Power plants, we allowed our manufactoring to die & now we have started to debase our money.

We killed GOD knows how many people in Iraq, we are getting KILLED In Afgan (pipeline & popy protection team)........Yet we see ourselfs as "Great" people.........Why?

When was the last time we invented a World Beater?..........Dyson?.......Made in the far East.

I can't wait till "They" can't afford the Fuel or Road Tax for their 3 Series, may be we become a nicer people?

Laugh at Britain .... don't know if you just watched Newsnight but JC Trichet (in a non confrontational type of way) certainly just did.

Sounds like what I was drinking last night CB - it is the HPC bottle that we are passing around. You should get your swig sometime in November 2010!

Thanks for the explanation MT. I am washing my hair in Nov 10 so will pass on this offer, thanks!

Mike

If you're referring to 'Great' Britain, then as mentioned on other threads the 'Great' is geographical along the lines of Greater london or Greater manchester.

Personally i wouldn''t guess what other peoples self perception is based on racial lines.

Actually, I did and woke up this morning with a painful headache - one of those ones which is so painful that you know you need to get up and get some pain killers but you are hurting too much to move out of bed.

Well actually I swap my Jag for a new Beamer tomorrow -- 5 series, not the 3 series trash. And I like the Jag --bummer.

Anyway, I think, as I've said before, the biggest problem with this country is its people. They are all greedy, selfish, don't-care-about-anyone-else-rude-bast*rds. And whilst I know there are many on this site that can't see it, much of our selfish, stuff-you attitude has come about precisely because we have adopted this beggar-thy-neighbour attitude, and that evil female PM. (Surely not long till she dies -- YES!)

We now pay for everything, whereas when I was young we didn't. We now have means testing, because 'we can't afford to have universal benefits' (= the populus won't pay more tax to help the poorest in society). Yes, the capitalist economy of the last 30 years has created growth -- people have made millions on ringtones (FFS), Starbucks have charged an excessive amount for a coffee (I'm sorry, I still just ask for 'a coffee'), our railways now squirrel away that which once would have been kept in the public sector (Manchester to London £250 return FFS).

But *real* wealth? Well, as you say our manufacturing is crumbling. We need to invest much more in high tech, but to do that we need a well educated workforce. And to turn that round takes 20 years. The best way to improve education by far is to reduce class sizes. That means a *massive* investment in education -- yes, folks much more tax spent on it. But we won't do that because we can't afford stupidly priced houses and big cars (I can -- but then I did have a great education and am making the most of it).

Yes, this country has gone down the pan. The answer, to raise the tax threshold so many more low paid don't pay tax. To remove all these iniquitous stealth taxes -- started by the Tories and extended by New Labour. And to rebalance the tax system so those who earn more pay more.

No doubt I'll by told that we already pay too much in tax. Do we? I can afford a new BMW 5 series -- and it precisely people like me that should be paying more in tax to REDISTRIBUTE (remember that good old Socialist word?) the wealth around the country so everyone gains.

Labour have been crap at it, and the Tories will just ignore it, so I'll be ok.

But if you want change, it is you THE PEOPLE that must do the changing.

The city will keep making loads of money, look at bonuses being paid out to the banksters despite of everything.

Where Britain is a laughing stock is in the national papers. I live abroad and laugh at the news with others, what a crazy country it is now. All far too PC and WTF are we doing spending fortunes on pikies (I can't call them that can I) and asylum seekers. My brother works for a local council as a surveyor, he was telling me a guy in his early 20's quit his job, he could take it no more. The guys job was to meet asylum seekers, tell them their rights, give them train passes along with food vouchers and house them in a hotel. That was his job done. They then were moved into permanent housing in a hotel on the south coast or permanently housed in flats or houses. Some of these people new their rights already and this guy was corrected on his understanding of the law. Of course Dr's and dentists were found and all sorts of diseases were treated, including HIV. Name me another country where this happens? How did we ever get to this sate?

I dont know where you live but where i live in north devon the majority of folks are not greedy money obsessed ratbags you describe. Im currenty on holiday in the north west highlands and there is no evidence of the wretchedness you describe. While I have nothing against city folks (ive lived in cities myself- no county bumpkin) I have to assume you live somewhere sh1te in the extreme. Ive never been in a starbucks. I tend not to go to locations which I know to be full of consumerist w@nkers.

All the families I know enjoy kayaking, cheap days on the beach, camping, having a laugh with their families outdoors. You cant really tell the rich from the poor.

Perhaps you need to move and change your own lifestyle. The whole of britain should not be tarred with the same brush. I agree that there is a disgusting streak running through this country- capitalism fuelled by debt and a benefit system which rewards lazyness, but the worst of it isconcentratred in the cities.

My view is move away from the cities and britain is great. My local hospital is great, the school my children attend is quite frankly amazing and I have all the shops etc I need and lots I dont. The countryside is very nice and although feeling the strain of intensive agriculture down south, scotland is largely unspoilt.

Britain is culturally, and environmentally diverse. Dont diss the whole place just because where you live is sh1t.

edit: I quoted you but am aiming more at the op or anyone else who takes the easy route and winges about "britain going to sh1t" all the time.

just reminds me of a mobile home holiday a couple of years ago.

If France, in the Dordogne.

we are at our table and their are two couples, both with youngish kids at a nearby table. they were loud.

anyway, the women were just talking abour their caravans.

sort of went like this.

"course, we had a new chrome door sill put on ours last year, really makes it look good now, dead easy to clean."

"yeah, we were going to do that, but I decided we'd get the knew doorway, its got better security now".

"thats nice, but we decided to replace the cooker as I like to give the family a roast on sundays"

"yeah, we did that two years ago, and stiffened up all the mattresses...so much better to sleep on now thatn the standard ones"

"we had that as an option when we bought it"

"yeah, well, we've been in the dealers and are trading this one in when we get back..fed up with it."

"wow, thats odd, cos we,ve just remortgaged and our new one is on order.. it a 30ft one and we need to get a bigger car"

"We've already got the bigger car, you must have noticed"

"yeah its nice, we are getting the Range Rover"

...

and so it went on....each one outbidding the other.....we werent earwigging, in fact, we moved tables.

You cant complain that we 'pay for everything now' and then complain that the 'the populus (sic) won't pay more tax'.

The taxes in the UK are high because we pay such high levels of benefit to the feckless and lazy of this country. If we had pride as a nation we would see the truly deserving (the disabled, old and infirm) living in comfort and the unemployed looked after until they can find another job. Instead we have a situation where the young and fit can make a living from having a 'bad back'. We have girls who leave school and live their whole life without working, spawning children from multiple fathers knowing that extra children will mean extra money. We have immigrants and illegals who have paid nothing into this country and yet can somehow have the ability to 'consult their lawyers' and 'appeal against decisions'.

I too am sick of this country and what it has become. Is this the socialist paradise that Labour have been wanting to achieve? A place where someone can earn £50,000 pa and still be entitled to benefits. A place where huge swathes of some cities now resemble downtown Mogadishu? A place where those who work hard benefit the least whilst those who are lazy live their lives in clover?

When was the last time we invented a World Beater?..........Dyson?.......Made in the far East.

Mike

Ah Dyson, from the factory in Wiltshire originally in 1993 and a great local employment success story. That was until 2002, when they decided to outsource to the Far East, making 800 people redundant. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/1805050.stm

Officially to make them more competitive, presumably to line the pockets of directors and shareholders. Lovely.

so it's not a worldbeater because it makes more profits for UK interests with UK patents and UK-dividends

Jobs where you advise/counsel Asylum seekers pay well. Counselling for victims of crime HERE IN BRITAIN is not funded at all. You are expected to do it on a voluntary basis.

How about that for making fish of one and fowl of t'other?

The questions are therefore, how did we get to this state? Who is to blame? Can it / will it ever be re-balanced and corrected?

How can you say we have high taxes? They are purely voluntary, you can pay as little as you like and the deserving are generously catered for. Well, this is what someone from Barclays told me anyway.

I'm shocked -- you mean shareholders and directors want to make profit instead of losses? It'll never catch on... <_<

Have you ever considered that in many cases, the overall tax rake taken out of a firm's cashflow (after all is totted up) is actually much larger than the official profit the company generated?

Ah Dyson, from the factory in Wiltshire originally in 1993 and a great local employment success story. That was until 2002, when they decided to outsource to the Far East, making 800 people redundant. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/1805050.stm

Officially to make them more competitive, presumably to line the pockets of directors and shareholders. Lovely.

Let's put this one into its correct perspective.

James Dyson revolutionised the humble vacuum cleaner: by experimenting on the technology used for industrial cyclones, mainly used for dust extraction. He had this inspiration owing to his first factory (In partnership) making his equally revolutionary Ballbarrow: the little spray booth they had constructed to finish the bodies, kept clogging up with overspray. However they couldn't afford the capital investment for a cyclone.

Dyson was so captivated by his concept, he sold out his share of the Ballbarrow business and spent much time developing the new cyclone vacuum: vacuums he found had not changed overmuch since the original Victorian patent had been granted!

After some 5,127 different prototypes, yes 5,127!!, James finally found the key: and patented his invention.

He demonstrated his machine to amongst others, Hoover and Electrolux: both of whom, naturally, stated it would never catch on!

A short time later, naturally, Hoover produced their own copycat machine; and were stuffed in the High court for patent infringement!

They had even, so cheekily, copied Dyson's further inspiration, by mounting a flexible tool attachment tool vertically: and that's what scuppered 'em!

Roll forward: with no capital (And who the hell can raise venture capital for engineering in good Old Britain!) Dyson agreed a deal with the US giant Amway: who proceeded to milk the revenue and not pay the license fees.

Luckily, Dyson found a financial abcker and sued Amways ass off!

With the huge capital released by this successful law suit, James Dyson was enabled to set up his modern factory in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

He tried so hard, years later to expand the facility and seek government and local government support: big zero.

James desperately wanted to keep manufacture in the UK. He was balked at every step in acquiring extra land and gaining planning permission for industry.

With increasing red tape, insane business rates and taxes, idiotic PC legislation (Now you employ more than 50 people Mr Dyson you must by law employ 5% invalids, 20% ethnic minorities etc), James gave up and established, like so many before, his plant in Malaysia.

He had to wait until 2006 to become Sir James Dyson.

Lord Dyson? Nope.

Baron Dyson? Not a bloody hope!

Alan Sugar was Sir back in the 80s: and now this clown is Lord Sugar and "Advising" governmen t on enterprise!

All Sugar did was have everything made in Asia from the get go! And designed in Asia, too.

Please don't blame Sir James: blame this idiotic country which values footballers, thieving bankers intent on destroying asset value for a profit and stealing other people's companies, and bubble brained celebs with no talents or skills far more than those who create real new fresh wealth and employment!

Oh and world beaters? Why are you starting off with Dyson vacuum cleaners FFS?

They don't even work very well. Everyone bought one, you notice they never replace it with another.

Try: Rolls Royce aero engines and work out from there.
