Yellow Pages

Recommended Posts

Just received the Yellow Pages for Manchester South 2009/2010. Looked very thin at 928 pages so i checked the number of pages from last years, 1228. Roughly a quarter less. Pretty good indicator of the real economy to my mind.....businesses gone bust or cutting ad spending.

Or is the big yellow book just "so yesterday"?

Its a bit of both, most people search online now. However fairly sure that business have cut back gone bust will thin out the pages

I can't read the bloody thing without a magnifying glass.

This comes into it.

In my experience, and for my business, it's an expensive way to advertise, and also can be uncertain; if you're in a large category, the enquiries you get are very dependant on where in the alphabet the first character of your trading name lies. However, you don't really know how big the category is, or where your ad will be until the book comes out. The contacts it generates are often tightwads after the cheapest quote no matter what, and they will have rang several other numbers, so you're up against a load of others. It's the sort of thing that startup businesses might try in their first year, then never bother with again because the results are disappointing.

We got offered a, supposed megadeal, for every branch to go in there. Experience in the past is that it puts a lot of timewasters your way, who like using the phone.

I put a free lineage advert on yell.com and within a few hours the sales staff were trying to sell me a more detailed advert for hundreds.

People are realizing that many people do look online when searching for a service. One of the best ways of advertising is the free link provided by Google Maps which will link to your own website.
