Gain 'citizen' Points By Voting For Labour

People who want to become British citizens could speed it up by becoming active members of political parties and trade unions, under government plans.

Migrants would have to earn points for citizenship under the new system rather than getting an automatic right to apply for citizenship after five years.

They could also lose points for "bad behaviour" which it has been suggested could include anti-war demonstrations.

The Conservatives dismissed the plans as "pure spin".

Migrants who have worked in the UK for five years have had the automatic right to apply for a British passport, which, immigration minister Phil Woolas told the BBC, was usually granted.

'Active citizens'

But in future, under the measures in the Borders, Citizenship and Immigration Bill which became law in July, migrants will have to spend five years as temporary residents, before becoming "probationary citizens".

They can then earn full citizenship by earning points - a process which is expected to take between a further one and five years.

A consultation document published on Monday seeks views on how those points might be earned.

It says the government's "initial thinking" is that volunteering and "civic activism" - such as being a school governor or "contributing to the democratic life of the country through trade union activities or canvassing for a political party" - could speed up the process.

"Active citizens will be able to speed up their journey through probationary citizenship and become a British citizen after one year rather than three," it says.

Refugees and spouses of migrants already in the UK will have their points assessed on "the basis of their continuing family relationship or protection needs".

'More challenging' test

But economic migrants would face a new points test, which would take into account the UK's economic needs.

The government suggests extra points could be earned by those who head to Scotland, or other areas "in need of further immigration".

Earning potential, special artistic or scientific skills, qualifications, occupations and English language abilities could also be rewarded.

There may also be a new test, which includes the existing citizenship test focussing on practical information about life in the UK but also includes "more challenging topics such as the historical and political context at the British citizenship stage".

Points could be lost by those where "an active disregard for UK values is demonstrated", the government suggests, while inviting views on what "attributes" might gain or lose points.

In an interview with the News of the World, Alan Johnson said, as well as earning points, they could be lost through "bad behaviour".

Amid reports that could include taking part in protests at soldiers' homecoming parades - Mr Woolas told the BBC he did not want to comment about "specific instances".

We don't want your sort around here.

Promise to vote labour? You're in.

Want to demonstrate against something that Mr Woolas has yet to decide upon? Like a labour war or ID cards or CCTV in your house? You're out............

Wtf is going on? :ph34r::ph34r::ph34r:

First half of that film was a brilliant satire on the police state - good as Robocop. Second half was just go USA shoot-'em-up nonsense.

everyone was very clean though. even after bug fights. very clean indeed.

Statism.

The violence will continue until either the economy completely disintegrates or some group arises to take the state on. There is no other group, so we will have collapse.

If you watch the sequals you can see that the films are meant as political comment.

The state power increases and earth becomes a faschist dictatorship.

meanwhile the bugs become less of a threat but more effort is made to combat them.

The fact that these ideas even see teh light of day and get discussed, means our government is bloated and out of control. We need a reduction in the number of MPs, and a reduction on what the governments remit is. The sooner Labour are kicked out of office the better. We just cannto afford anymore of this rubbish.

Yes cut the number of MPs. Root out the waste in local government which should return to being a service provider. Cut the waste in Europe. Likley to happen? No becasue to many talentless people in politrics would have nothing else to do.

Consultation document intended to be implemented approx July 2011.

Good way to make some noise before the election, without having to actually implement anything.

Meanwhile, as an immigrant who has jumped through all these new hoops every time Labour panic and the goal posts move,

it's getting a little old.

The deal was, work for cheap for X years, and one day the Home Office will get out of your face.

Not even that interested in citizenship; certainly don't want benefits.
