Apparently 3 US hikers, without interpreters or a guide 'strayed' from a Northern Iraq 'Tourist' resort into Iran.

Tourists! My ****!

It is laughable that they expect us to fall for this pish !!

This is the offical stance from the US:

US Iraq advice

I can't see too many people reading that and thinking - 'Yes lets just head off to Iraq and wander around the border with Iran !!'.

This story is dubious to say the least. If it is true - then these blokes are ******ing mental.

Just done a bit of searching. Found this article with names from CNN.

CNN

Seems two of the blokes are Shon Meckfessel and Joshua Fattal. Shon seems to be an 'anarchist' author who has written a book about travelling through Eastern Europe.

Shon

I may have been wrong. These blokes were indeed perhaps just mentalists. Backpacking along the Iraq/Iran border..

I once strayed off the A556 and ended up in Mobberley, but Iran was never really an option.

What a load of balls.

Not totally improbable: The autonymous Kurdish region is trying hard to develop a tourist trade. I've looked into it myself. You can fly chartered from Istanbul to Diyarbakir (Turkey) then cross the border. There are some amazing places to visit in northern Iraq.

Here's the Kurdish region's tourism website:

If it was safe, I'd love to go hiking in Iraq. So much wonderful geology and history is there.

Sadly, so are landmines and nutters with guns.

No nutters with guns in the Kurdish region. From all accounts it's very safe.

But hiking - unguided - near a border to a country that you're not allowed to visit unaccompanied (Iran, if American) is just stupid. And yes, very suspicious.
