We are told in the story that it was the conservative government that introduced fascism. They used fears of avian flu to restlessly crack down on civil liberties. To engineer fears of terrorism to introduce legislation that they then use to rub out anything they don't approve of. I then wonder how hollow that must seem now to all the labour party members watching. By the way I heartily reconomend this book to anyone wanting to learn about fascism and its history: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Liberal-Fascism-Hi...4515&sr=8-1 It charts the history of fascism and its grounding on the left, and points out liberals are so desperate to tell us how fascism will be attacking at any moment from the right, that we won't see it creap up on us from the left. I thought it was a new party that rose to power after a terrorist incident, crushing both Conservative and Labour? I seem to remember there was a pie-chart distribution of votes and red and blue were both represented. Unless they changed it to reflect more current day events.. Most Tories (esp. the Europhobes) are fairly unashamed fascists if you mean a national strength movement and a dislike of those who weaken it within and without. His book seems to be predicated on a strange argument that the term 'fascist' is over-used and that therefore... he will over-apply it himself. I am amazed you discovered through your historical researches that the Roman Republic was left wing. Personally I find the US culture wars a bore and it is sad to see British people who should know better bandying around terminology like 'liberal' and 'leftist' as they do. I get the feeling a lot of Conservative and Labour party members would be much happier in the Republican and Democratic parties respectively where they can play their West Wing fantasies out more fully. Alan Moore said he guessed that the Tories would lose in 1983, hence nuclear disarmament, hence the survival of Britain in a nuclear war (questionable but still). During the Thatcher years, this was back in 1981 that I would have started writing "V for Vendetta," 1982 or something like that, the riots were kicking off at Southall and Toxteth and all of a sudden what had been a relatively stable country had now got very heavy handed riot police going in and beating up demonstrators. It was starting to look a bit futuristic and a bit grim. Basically, it was "V for Vendetta." I had got this fascist police state and this very romantic anarchist terrorist. There's still been some talk about doing a film of "V for Vendetta," but I don't know whether if America is ready for the terrorist hero just yet, you know. (audience laughs) But of course he hates Blair, Brown, Blunkett, Straw and all that shower, the anarchists and the left always have anyway outside the feverish imaginations of certain posters here who have somehow convinced themselves that failing to regulate and then bailing out banks is the Sine qua non of socialist principles. Facts are people want to vote for a party that protects jobs without all the crap about gassing the jews being dragged up. Corporations hate the BNP because it cut's off cheap imported labour for them to proft from and the 3 main parties are scared because the BNP are not in bed with them. if you want less goverment, lower taxes and a job to go to then it's obvious who to vote for.
