12,000 Stores 'closed This Year'

Even without the depression affecting peoples' purchasing power, High Street shops are under attack from two directions. On the one hand they have to cope with astronomical rent and rates, on the other most stuff can be bought far cheaper over the internet. Makes for a very competitive environment...

The headline is misleading.

About 12,000 independent shops and nearly 7,000 branches of major chains have closed so far this year in England and Wales, according to research

Thats 19,000 and not 12,000. They should have properly span it and had the headline as 7,000 Stores close.
