Bbc After Labour

What does the BBC do after their puppermasters have gone? Do they brazenly start to pander to the new power? Do they simply roll over that easily, or do they undergo noticable changes. Roguishly off topic, I know. I just can't picture how they reconcile their clear Labour and HPI bias under a new leadership.

I have not detected any bias towards labour from the BBC as a whole - news etc. I know that radio 4 and suchlike has quite a lot of leftie PC influence, but Labour is now a right-wing party anyway.

I think back to the later years of the last Tory government when Michael Hestletine used to get a lot of airtime during which he used to be very good at completely undermining the interviewer and totally evading all questions. And yet he kept being invited back.

I thought at one point that the Tories would be forced to dismantle the BBC totally because of the bias, but now I think Cameron will have much bigger fish to fry so the deconstruction of it may not happen all at once. Expect a a change of top brass first, then a visual overhaul of sets, followed by Labour party people like Marr getting canned, etc.

Generally, I think the BBC disgraced itself in this period by following such a strong and biased political agenda, but it must be made clear that this agenda was not always "on message" with Labour. Look at the coverage on Iraq, for example, when it was strongly against the Government line. I think my point is a strong political perspective one way or the other is not acceptable from a national broadcaster, and yet this is what we get from the BBC, which is why you get people on the right and left complaining about bias at the same time. Hopefully their next incarnation will be more neutral, like the civil service used to be before Labour ruined that as well.

LABOUR MOUTHPIECE!!!!!!

It's not a Labour mouthpiece, the Tories get just as much airtime.

What about the coverage of Joanna Lumley's Gurkha campaign, what about the loutish utterances of Jeremy Clarkson, the frequent interviews with David Cameron who is 1000 times more telegenic than Gordon Brown? What about the coverage of the inadequate equipment for British soldiers in Afghanistan? What about the sensationalist coverage of Labour's decimation in the Euro elections and the Norwich North by-election?

If it looks like Brown is determined to remain as PM until the next election whatever harm that might do to the country and the Labour Party, the BBC has to accept that probability. It can't campaign to get him to resign or for someone to start a leadership battle, can it?

It's hard to argue that the BBC is a conservative institution though - because it demonstrably isn't. Like I said in my earlier post, the BBC can be politically biased in either direction when it wants to be. There is no denying the official BBC message was anti-Iraq war, and it has no right to make these editorial decisions. It must report the news neutrally whether it likes it or not. IMO the BBC is the best news provider in the world, by ten country miles, but it musn't allow the political prejudices of its senior staff to creep through in the news. Its remit as "educator" has been taken to mean "programmer" in terms of PC. Look at the storylines in soaps or characters on kids' TV. To argue there is no political agenda is hard work.

JL & THe Gurkha's, Labours Decimations, Inadequate military funding..... - you mean "the News" as in "what was actually happenning on that day" HA HA HA - be thankfull you still live in a country where people don't "Remind" you that you didn't actually see any of that, nobody said anything and its probably best you go home and forget about it.

Or alternatively, vote labour in the next GE

Spin has trebled under Labour. We got McBride, Campbell, Mandelson, Draper, these party activist would have the Beeb feed us the party political goods at every chance and hand gesture us into submission. HPI and VI is rife. BBC property porn lives on and is going strong. Have you seen daytime TV recently? It's still all there, the sheer greedy pwofit is evident on every show, pwofit, pwofit, pwofit darling. Green shoots are appearing years before they actually are due to. None of them hold this government in the contempt they deserve, and it's all shallow and predictable spin. So clear to me, perhaps it is not to others. But equally, does this nonsense just carry on as normal with a power change? Do they simply hire the same spin doctors and carry on as normal? We are idiots, after all.

I really hope not. I've seen a lot of tv around the world and the BBC just cannot be beaten - no other broadcaster even comes close.

I'd love to say the same, and up until 5 yrs ago I was in agreement.

However, now.

Scrap it - It is institutionally rotten to the core.

What is it they call it these days??

NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE

There are far worse offenders globally speaking of course. They all get ridiculed by proper news channels on the internets. BBC is one of the least bad of a bad bunch, but they are still our primary news station here in blighty.

I disagree - the BBC actually drags up the quality of the independent channels. Sky, ITV, C4 are all better for having the BBC to compete with. I live in north america and the tv is beyond dreadful - lots of channels, but every single one like a crappier version of Sky One!!

And as for the accusation that the BBC is biased - doesn't every side accuse them of that? Anyway, there's always fox news if you want balanced reporting!

I can't agree with this. The quality of the BBC's reporting is awful. North American TV being even more awful doesn't change this. The BBC is the broadcast arm of the political class, "educating" the population with the views this class think they should have.

Two immediate suggestions for change spring to mind:

- The political journalists are all far too close to the politicians they are supposed to be scrutinising. They should not be allowed to have dinner/ otherwise socialise with them. Ever.

- The BBC's remit should not extend to "educating" viewers as this has just led to a narrow-minded group of people trying to impose their narrow PC views on the rest of the population.

Anyone who has ever watched news broadcasts overseas understands what the BBC brings to the trade.

Love it, what is Fox News's opinion about the occupied west bank in Gaza? Oh yeah, the word "occupied" is banned, that's from the top. What about the good old War on Terror? (Please dont see: Cost of U.S. War and Occupation of Iraq $668,740,885,857) and counting. What is Fox News' opinion on torture? Let's not go there huh.

We really are (and ignoring the national gap) fed a load of old b*****. They throw in the odd quirky story to show that they are still human, but look at these quirky stories as the cynical public taming fodder that they are, and notice there is little substance at all to most of the stories they do, serious or "quirky". Journalism sold out, and we still buy it!

A bit like saying we'll forgive the mind control because they make such very good nature documentaries.

I condemn you to a lifetime of watching The One Show on a continuous loop.

Well exactly.

If you want some unbiased news, you probably should go to one of the news agencies such as Reuters.
