"He's got this summer to show he's got the capability to do it," Mr Sheerman said.

"In any other human organisation I know, if the chief executive actually doesn't make it, he doesn't get it and he doesn't deliver, then he's got to consider his position

Clarles Clarke is in this (of course) but maybe they'll grow a pair and save Brown the inconvenience of ever actually having to face a vote outside a safe seat.

You think Gordon can stop that?

I don't know. From what I gathered the only reason he wasn't bundled out the door in April was because of the above formula - Brown out = Cameron in. They could go with a winter election as poor weather usually hits the Tory vote more, but whatever they do they're out for ever, at least as we know the party today.

Poor weather has ALWAYS murdered the Labour vote more. Where did you get the idea it was the other way round?

My take on Brown is that he's in power because nobody else wants to wreck their career on the 2010 election. However, backbenchers in reasonable majority seats have a different agenda - job security - and will want someone in who can soften the blow and save some jobs.

Brown is going nowhere is he.

He knows all too well he committed political suicide a long time ago when the spineless Labour party didn't have to balls to challenge him. If he were a leader with authority he'd call an election. He'd have been impeached in the USA

Thankfully, his and this Labour party's experiment in power will make them unelectable for generations.

So, thanks Gordon. Your slack jawed ineptitude is most welcome for England.

Gordon's going to sit it out till the last last possible moment because if he calls an election before that last moment he will be losing precious weeks to destroy the country for the Conservatives.

Labour's mission now is to make the British economy into a basket case and destroy as many institutions/ good honest things as they can. They are leaving as many booby traps as possible for the Conservatives in the hope that the horror of saving the country by slashing spending / repairing Brown's evil will get Labour voted back in after one term out.

You have to think like a devious / callous scumbag who takes pride in his/her mendaciousness and is happy to lead their country to the gallows for the sake of it.

I mean honestly, who is a member of Nu Labour? Fakes, criminals, liars, grabbers, champagne socialists, Europhiles (Destroy UK at all costs so we have to join) and the bitter.

Just look at them on the front bench at Crime Minister's Questionable to see the giggling, smirking little monkeys at their best.

Don't forget Ed Balls' comment on the record tax-take on families "SO WHAT".

Evil and self-serving.

Poor weather has ALWAYS murdered the Labour vote more.

This is correct.

And whether McBroon stays or goes won't alter the outcome of the May 2010 GE - NuLab will be decimated as they so thoroughly deserve. I can't believe D-503 suggests otherwise

I thought that was from the days when Labour voters trudged to the polls in the pouring rain, while Tory toffs swept past in their Daimlers aiming for the puddles...

Does it still apply outside the fevered brains of Labour apparatchiks?

I was thinking about this after the GDP figures yesterday. I have a theory. THe economy is about to go through the toughest spt, the bit where we get to paiy for the bailout and the wanton excess of the last decade. Senior labour figures know that if they are in power when this happens, their party is history. Not for the next election, but are history forever. They are facing the prospect of becoming the third party to lib dems.

Far better to call a general election, get the one eyed porridge wog out, and let the conservatives take some of the rap.

If it was they'd have hardly been elected.

The truth is that many Labour voters are less engaged and more easily put off from voting. Rain should do it.

Why else do you think they push every form of remote, from-the-comfort-of-your-chair voting?

I seem to remember that he was given a notice period after Crewe and Nantwich, the Euro elections etc. etc. But, surprise surprise, no serious challenge materialised.

I don't see any reason to change the argument I've put forward on the many other 'Will Gordon go before the election?' threads. IMO he won't, because:

1. The Labour leadership election rules make it virtually impossible to depose a leader who doesn't go voluntarily, and the election procedure takes at least three months to conclude.

2. If he did leave office, Harman would become interim PM, possibly for quite a long time given the time it takes to run the aforementioned leadership election. All it would take is for her to use that position to try to push through loony feminist laws or to seriously slip up in relation to the banks, Afghanistan, other international issues etc., and there go another 50 Labour seats when the time eventually comes. Her previous record suggests that the chances of such slip-ups are somewhere between highly probable and inevitable.

3. No credible, long-term leader with any serious political ambition would stand in this scenario, because (i) they'd be tainted as a Heseltine figure, and (ii) they would be in office for a few short months before being in opposition for the rest of their careers; probably not as party leader, either, if they ended up taking the rap for a worse-than-expected election defeat.

The solution is obvious; force Brown out and keep Harperson bound and gagged in the dungeons of No 10.

Not an envious choice for Labour activists - if they try to oust Brown it's a civil war and the destruction of the Labour Party. If they keep Brown it's electoral meltdown and the destruction of the Labour Party.

For the rest of us it's pretty clear that the Labour Party is no longer fit for purpose (representing the working class and all that unfashionable stuff) so we can enjoy the spectacle either way.

I agree 100% with this. If they bankrupt everyone but earn an extra fiver for themselves, I think they would call it a job well done.

I find it highly amusing that people still think who we have in power will make a difference!

Same sh1t different colour tie. Politicians in the pockets of big business and corporate interests, fleecing the general public and maintaining their social dominance, while we feed off the scraps to compete for some sort of quality of life.

The only chance Gordo has of pulling through this with any credibility is if he acknowledges that Joe average has had nothing but pain over the last couple of yrs or more and to apply a significant tax cut to encourage a bit of spending or just to make ordinary working people that didn't get into property developing feel a bit better off. He really has to appreciate that not everyone experienced the benefits of the great decade he keeps harping on about, in fact I'd say the majority didn't. Even if he did it for a couple of yrs he would get significant support back for the party.
