Anyone want to sweepstake on the bankruptcy of the Guardian group once the society jobs income dries up?

It would be unfair of me to take your money:

GMG has various divisions and joint venture businesses: Guardian News & Media (the Guardian, the Observer, guardian.co.uk); GMG Regional Media (Manchester Evening News, other local newspapers in the North West and South of England, Manchester Online, Channel M); GMG Radio (regional radio stations under the Smooth, Real, and Rock Radio brands); Trader Media Group (the Auto Trader magazine and website), which it owns jointly with private equity firm Apax); GMG Property Services (estate agency software providers Vebra and Core, lettings software provider CFP Software, graphic design consultancy The Media Design House and consumer portal ThinkProperty.com); and Emap, the B2B events, data and publishing company, also jointly owned with Apax.

Guardian Media Group exists to support the core purpose of its owner, the Scott Trust: to secure the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in perpetuity.[1]

In March 2007 GMG sold 49.9% of Trader Media Group to Apax Partners, in a deal that valued Trader Media Group at £1.35 billion. In December 2007 it was announced that GMG and Apax had made a successful bid to buy Emap's business-to-business arm for around £1 billion.[2]

Nops... IIRC, the Tories have already said that they no longer will make use of the Guardians' job advert services when they are back in power but that they'll use the web and save a lot of money this way.

Not if they're going via any agencies - most of the money moved to the web years ago - it's why Rupert keeps trying (and failing) to get people to buy his papers by online subscription.

Governments love quangos - they can keep accountability at arms length and stuff them with their own placemen.

Oppositions love them too - they can accuse the government of waste without actually proposing any real change. Once in power the current opposition will create their own quangos in the background whilst publicly trumpeting the closure of the current ones.

Margaret Thatcher rode to power on such a trick.

Not wasting money on agencies would save even more ... ;-)

Still this was announced in 2006 by Osborne, so, it's anyone's guess what'll happen... either way, there are massive savings to be had it seems:

"The Conservative Party has promised to overhaul advertising for public sector jobs in a move that could potentially hit The Guardian newspaper. Shadow chancellor George Osborne has vowed to move all public sector job ads from newspapers to a new official website if his party comes to power after the next general election. This plan could result in newspapers, particularly The Guardian's Wednesday Society section, losing around £790m spent by local and central government on job ads each year. The dedicated public sector website would only cost an estimated £5m."

It's so refreshing to see that our well-meaning and hard-working councils are spending our council tax wisely rather than investing it in some bank abroad

My council is very happy at the moment because:

"Early predictions last autumn on recovering the money are now far more hopeful. The anticipated £15 million loss may now be more like £3 million and whilst we did not gain the interest it is a far better picture than we had dared hoped for last year."

Well I'm so much more reassured now and will have a really good nights' sleep ;)

If you really want to do something, everyone write to the local Mayor and say they don't wan't no more money spent on senior executives and strategy writers and suggest a job freeze for posts above £35K. If he gets one letter it will be discarded, if he got 20 he would start to get antzy...
