I like the way the woman on there proclaims that everyone agrees in stimulus and that when the private sector contracts the public sector must expand to take up the slack.

Right. Every knows that house prices only ever go up...

Obama is live on BBC2 here. He just said:

"Passing the Healthcare Bill is central to the Economic Recovery"

So, we have a nobel prize winning economist and a former advisor to a president on the show- and the smartest comment came from the presenter when she pointed out that no account had been taken of the natural human reaction to hard times- which was to save money not spend it, making any attempt to stimulate consumption directly pointless.

The world seems to be run by people with their heads up their ass- we are doomed.

The word GORMLESS springs to mind.

What an upside down world we live in today....

Agreed. I found the nobel prizewinner to be far short of his medal. In fact I found him lacking in intelligence, insight, knowledge or research. In short, I was amazed at how thick he appeared but perhaps he had other talents not easily spotted. Got to give her credit: Kirsty is often way ahead of people who claim to be experts in their field. She's not known as thinking man's crumpet for nothing.

It went downhill from there.

The report on polygamy was really poor, even by BBC standards.

They highlight one case of abuse in an illegal polygamous marriage and then spend far more time talking about women with high flying careers that want polygamy.

Not once did they consider the arrangement might work out great for the high flyer, but things might not be quite so rosy for the other wife.

The high flyer wants her career but also wants to be respectably married and have children. So the husband will marry a cousin from Pakistan who will come to this country never learning to speak English, never leaving the house, being used as a domestic slave and probably getting the crap kicked out of her on a regular basis.

Also agreed. It was a missed opportunity focussing on the wrong angle.

Have you noticed the spelling on the BBC lately - website and captions?

The guy on the programme this evening was apparently a 'noble prizewinner'.

They don't teach using your brain anymore, it might lead to people questioning their faith in the party.

question:

doesnt there have to BE a recovery, for it to be in crisis?

question:

There doesn't have to be a recovery before they start talking about green shoots.

Presumably the crisis comes when they can't think of anything they can say is a green shoot?

No, it is you that are wrong. The reason for his inert behaviour on Newsnight was the Beebs' charter prevents them from passing a current through guests to stimulate them into shedding light on a given topic.

You are winding us (who didn't see it) up DC?

If not, then is this not an all-time classic?

Does 'the woman' have a name please?

Apologies, I will endeavour to remember to refer to her as a 'brainless bint' so as not to insult any members of the fairer sex ;)

The er brainless bint in question would be Philippa Malmgren. Apparently she was Bush's economic advisor

It was a predictably weak piece that avoided suggesting the real actions that the USA needs to undertake to avoid economic collapse:

1. Total reform of the financial sector, with the auditing of the Fed, the break-up of dominant private institutions and the write-down of bad debt.

2. Huge cuts in US Government spending, most notably in defence, with special attention given to ending foreign wars and occupations, and the closing of overseas bases.
