Swine Flu: Shops Selling Out Of Thermometers

Recommended Posts

Nervous callers to GPs and visitors to the NHS Direct symptom-checker website are routinely asked if they have a fever, prompting a run on limited stocks.

Superdrug has sold out of its £7.92 digital thermometer in the majority of stores and stocks will not be replenished until Friday. Sales increased by five times last week, after doubling for two weeks running. LLoyds Chemist says it is selling 700pc more thermometers than this time last year and 70pc more anti-bacterial hand gel.

Manufacturers are scrambling to keep up with orders. Brannan Thermometers, a Cumbria-based manufacturer and distributor, supplies clinical thermometers to high-street stores. Ian Wilson, sales director, said: "It's gone nuts this morning." He was frantically dealing with calls from individuals, large retailers whose normal suppliers have run out, and existing customers demanding new stock.

"It's a struggle," Mr Wilson added. "I really wouldn't want to say that we can keep up with demand."

Since the EU banned traditional mercury clinical thermometers, Brannan imports digital models from the Far East.

"Price and availability may become an issue," said Mr Wilson. "I'm not trying to be alarmist but it's a question of supply and demand. Our stock is going down at a rate of knots."

Almost 800,000 people accessed the NHS swine flu symptom checker online last week, which asks patients whether they have a high temperature, among several other questions.

Could this get the velocity of money moving? Well to the far east.

Says it all really. Chase the diagnosis and ignore the cause. Silly buggers.
