TruraBuoy
THE Government is borrowing €30.5m a day to pay the unsustainable wages of public sector workers who are earning up to 50 per cent more per hour than those in the private sector.New figures obtained by the Sunday Independent reveal that inflated wages and inflexible work practices in the public sector are punishing the Irish economy and causing Ireland's debt levels to spiral out of control. As the Dail rose on Friday for a 10-week summer break, the economy continues to flounder, with the Government now borrowing €1bn a month to bridge the gap between tax returns and the cost of running the bloated public sector. CokeSnortingTory
But as in the UK, the Irish Gov threw billions at the banks, so the moral case for reducing the public sector is compromised.

dr ray
I wasn't aware the Irish had much of a bloated public sector. They were short of medical staff and I have had enquiries for private scans from folk in Ireland as they could not get them locally. When I looked towards doing the odd weeks work there I found I could earn more in the UK. Their problem is that construction was a huge part of their economy (and therefore tax revenue) and they are spending millions holding the banks together. I think the public sector story is an attempt to demonise and punish a sector of the population and it will be bad news for Ireland because all the educated folk such as teachers and medical/nursing staff will p1ss off as they have done in previous times and make matters worse. Nothing like emigration for destroying the housing market.

dr ray
I'm pleased to see you were considering putting your public funded skills to use for personal gain. Stupid comment. Do you suggest I do voluntary work and live off benefit or are you suggesting I should be made to work forcibly with the occasional beating for doctors who aren't pulling their weight? We can't all be as altruistic as you obviously are and give our time freely (although as it happens that is exactly what I am doing at the moment while waiting to patch up a motorcyclist)

Are you trying to suggest that doctors are underpaid? Do you know many doctors living on the bread line? We always hear how stretched the NHS is but mercifully some doctors can always find the time for private work.

What did you do for your fellow man today? At least you're not one of these welfare state people who do the job out of love for the people. As it happens, I spent the day caring for someone unable to care for themselves, as I do most days, unpaid, because I chose to do so. I'm not a fascist. I just want to see the end of the welfare state and all its hangers on.

I don't see why you think you fund my private practice unless you consult me privately and no one is forcing you to do that. My private practice takes patients off the NHS list and any I do using NHS facilities brings income into the NHS. The income I get is also taxed and the tax I pay in 2-3 years would more than finance the training of a doctor. The income from private practice allows the NHS to pay consultants less than it would otherwise to retain them within the NHS.

You were and are self taught all paid for by your private practice? The existence of the welfare state creates greater demand for consultants etc. If you were all competing for fees from private healthcare you would be cheaper to use. dr ray
You never received any training initially and ongoing from the NHS then? Yes and I have more than paid it back. The same could be said for training provided to individuals by the armed forces/police/civil service many of whom go on to jobs in the private sector. At least I still give the benefit of my training back to the people who paid for it. You were and are self taught all paid for by your private practice? I buy books for our department off ebay with my own money. Yes I am largely self taught. Private practice gives you the incentive to develop new marketable skills. I get my NHS wage whatever I chose to do or not do. The existence of the welfare state creates greater demand for consultants etc. If you were all competing for fees from private healthcare you would be cheaper to use. Like in the USA you mean. It's socialised medicine which is driving down doctors income in the US. That's why they oppose Obama's health reforms.
24gray24
The trouble with free enterprise when it comes to doctors is this: you'd pay every penny you own for a cure of a fatal disease. If you allowed "free enterprise" in medicine, the doctors could all club together to quadruple their rates, and there's nothing you could do about it. If you tried to regulate it to prevent them charging whatever they like, then it's not free enterprise. Some people are just Tory: they wouldn't want to pay a penny for anyone's life, not even their own grandmother, and half their moral positions are just arguments to avoid paying a penny for anyone else. So let's get back to the original question: when does Ireland admit the tiger is dead (and it's back to potatoes and butter)?

One of the reasons the Chinese are such great savers is that they have no welfare state and maybe the reason the Irish (and the British) were so happy to run up huge personal debts is because they know the welfare state will catch them if they fall. This especially applies to healthcare costs. It seems likely that the welfare state in the West, while not allowing people to die of starvation, exposure or disease has made people reckless with money and prepared to go through life without savings. You could argue though that by paying large (ish) taxes to the state in this country people are saving money and have just been misled into thinking governments do a good job of it.
