KingBingo
Any other particularly good suggestions I will put up. Situation: The royal family have all suddenly died from Corgie flu (a rare strain). According to some quirk of the constitution the monarchy falls to you. Alas popular will has decreed to abolition the monarchy, and you agreed. However, the mass sentiment allows you one first and final act as King/Queen. What do you choose, you can choose only one. Hang anyone is debt, which probably means hanging 99% of the population. I could still keep the throne too after this mass purge. It's the only way.

Dave Spart
Assuming I could pass any laws I wanted I would among other things do the following: Introduce the pure form of land tax giving all those who work for a living a much higher disposable income but then make saving compulsory (tax deductable) providing British Industry with vast new funds to invest in new, world-leading capital. Reform our democratic institutes putting much more power in the hands of The People, including a constitutional mechanism to force referendums and general elections, a mechanism to force Parliament to introduce bills The People want passed into law and a mechanism enabling The People to have the final say on whether a piece of legislation becomes law. Listen to the public to discover all those little irritations and abolish them where possible in particular the nannying measures Nulab have introduced such as speed cameras, sleeping policemen (road humps), excessive road signs etc (Britain seems to be filled with measures designed to cause irritation). Ensure all Britiain's youth got to see how things are done in better, more successful countries so they can see just how pathetic the UK is becoming. Clip the wings of the media barons, especially Murdoch, making them accountable to the people, not the other way around. Ensure every member of the media was screened for personality disorders such as sociopathy and psychopathy. Introduce a written constitution which declared that no bank shall ever receive aid from the state. Ensure that the Estate Agency business was as stringently regulated as the most serious professions. Ensure that every single member of the banking industry was fully qualified for the role they occupied and screened for personality disorders such as sociopathy and psychopathy. Ensure that all banking products (such as CDSes) openly underwent peer review, stringent testing and certification before being used for commerical use with the public able to prevent certification and to stop the use of instruments subsequently found to be inappropriate. Introduce legislation that meant when a property goes on sale, for the first three months only those intending to own and occupy the property as their primary residence could purchase the property, thus giving FTBs a fair chance and putting BTLers at the back of the queue. Reintroduce corporal punishment ensuring punishment was dealt to criminals quickly and efficiently at the least additional cost to society beyond the damage the criminal had already caused. Use the media to ensure The People understood precisely how the country's legal system, democratic system and constitution works and their rights and how they can mobilise to change that system to reflect their will ensuring we consistently have a government of the people by the people for the people. There are others but that'll do for a start. Edited July 9, 2009 by Dave Spart
Moo
If those were the only options, it'd be a very stringent immigration system. (Before anyone waves the BNP card at the me, there's a big difference between "sorry, we're full" and chucking out existing Brits.)
KingBingo
Camilla? That's why you agree to being King for only a day, you don't want to have to take her to bed that night.
HumanAction
I voted Gold standard because that is closest to the abandonment of fiat money. I think a couple of the other things would probably be reasonable places to start discussions also.

swissy_fit
Close the BBC, sell the assets. No. Reform it, make it what it was, respected worldwide for its (relatively) balanced and independent news broadcasts. Put Britain on the Gold Standard. Too late. Maybe later after the disaster has played itself out. Repeal the act of Union (Eng/Wal/Scot/NI all independent) Why? I can(just) tolerate the whining Scots (not referring to all Scots here, only the whining ones), otherwise it seems OK as it is. We need them, they need us, that's the reality. However it would make more sense if the Scots MPs couldn't vote on English-only issues. Halt immigration (install a point system with a high bar) Why? What we actually need to do is find a way of exporting our more barbaric natives now there's no empire to use them as cannon-fodder on. Just stop giving out money - freeloaders will disappear, workers will remain. Withdraw from the EU Too late. Also for all its faults it has a civilising influence on the UK. Just be firmer and don't back down with the silly stuff. Make it illegal for anyone to have total debt more than 2.5x income Impractical and anti-entrepreneurial.
