'supersave Me'. Merryn Somerset Webb

Recommended Posts

A welcome Money Programme on the crisis savers face, hosted by fragrant English rose, HPC pin-up and cool voice of reason - the lovely Merryn Somerset Webb:

Merryn_Somerset_Webb_md.jpg

I shall not dwell here on the unforgivable abuse this magnificent woman received at the hands of the boorish Hamish McTavish, merely transcribe the Radio Times blurb:

'Merryn Somerset Webb explores the impact of the current economic crisis on Britain's savers. As the nation tightens its collective belt, she looks at the options available to savers in a world of low interest rates, squeezes on pensions, and the dual threats of inflation and deflation. So should your money be in shares, gold, or under the mattress?'

Someone should start a thread headed "The Merits of Merryn Somerset Webb vs Sarah Beeny", I bet it would get something like 1,000 hits :(

Mostly of the salivating kind

Have you seen the hard core porn threads on the off topic forum? Well, not actual hard core porn threads, but they have those words in the thread title (there's a good reason, honest!).

A couple of pages of posts and one has 100,000 hits, one has 20,000 hits.

It's a good way to advertise HPC actually. We should set up one of these honey-trap threads with a mission statement.

I mean I like what she says and everything, but do you guys really think she is that fit.

Sarah Beany as well.

They are on the average side really.

I would say Krusty is far more doable, and even she isn't that hot.

merryn is extremely intelligent and clued up but is not unusually attractive.

beeney knows a lot in her own specialist area [renovating houses] and is, let's face it, extremely hot.

krusty is attractive but massively empty-headed.

Isn't this a clear case of quality (MSW) over quantity (other candidates)?

I'm surprised Kerry Katona isn't yet in the equation...

These thoughts of Kerry and Krusty are leaving me with rather a 'soiled' feeling.

I much prefer the memory of Merryn, firmly putting a 'presenter' in his place, and young Gemma, a youthful renter enjoying the falling market:

Ahhhh! That's a lot better...

Hmmmmm. Was it just me or was that a bit rubbish!?

It was very amateurish & shallow, wasn't it? I expected a lot better from the girl ...

It was dumbed down to the point it was absolutely worthless.

And why so 'hands off'?. A middle-aged woman whose pension (stock market invested) is tanking, is not only not dissuaded from becoming a market investor with her last £10K, but she's taken to meet a trader learn the ropes! FFS She's too old, too poor, too naive, too undiversified. Basic ground rules.

Why wasn't she told this? Instead the trader stressed what a great opportunity awaited her.

It was a complete waste of 30 mins of my life. It was lightweight. The BTLer's situation wasn't analysed anything like deep enough.

I thought it would help me with my savings. It offered less than I know already.

Very disappointing.

Yes - after half an hour the advice was spread your 'bets'.

Divide your money between savings account, pension, shares and bonds.

That way you can get ripped off by four people instead of one.

Keep our financial sector employed losing your hard earned dosh.

yeah. Yet another program that just proves to me there are yet more people in the UK that literally have more money that brains.

How the hell were any of those people in a position to have savings?

A property investor that didn't want to think about, and wasn't concerned about capital depreciation.

A guy that's bought an old Ferrari, and is now driving it round a recession bound, post industrial landscape, where in a few years even a Nissan Micra will have its wheels nicked.

A more mature woman who plainly can't use a computer, decides to start playing the US stock market at the most volatile moment in history.

Yeah good luck with that!
