Elected Police Chiefs A Bad Idea

I think it's a bad idea to elect anyone involved with law enforcement. The law is supposed to be enforced without fear or favor and it won't be if there are political considerations taken into account.

Once, I'd have agreed with you. The problem is that some police chiefs (I'm thinking Ian Blair for example) have taken it upon themselves to get involved in politics (e.g. by touring around with government ministers to sell the idea of ID cards). If they're going to be politicians then they have to accept democratic accountability, it's dangerous to have it any other way. Personally, I'd settle for some kind of law disallowing policemen/women from being involved in political activity of any sort. Failing that, the electorate should have the chance to get rid of them.
