Sovereign Victoria Shields

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how much a sovereign victoria shield is worth?

I have an 1884 - was wondering if it is worth any more than the usual sovereign?

Thanks for any help

Sharpe,

Shield backs usually attract a premium if in good nick.

Check fleecebay for what they are going for, and compare them to yours.

CID are knocking Vicsovs out at about 160, buying at 134. It's pot luck what you end up with off them.

It should be a Melbourne or Sidney mintmark. Look for tiny M or S under the wreath on the back. Shields are around £30 more than St George of the same date and condition so should be worth around 170-180 - much more if uncirculated, scrap value (130) if worn or damaged.

Dealers tend to pay scrap value or 50-60% book value (whichever is greater) so you would be better off selling on ebay unless its scrap value only (ebay will take around £15 in fees)
